UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model Champ Jason Feger Ready to Tackle DIRTcar Nationals

Jason Feger officially put the cap on his spectacular 2009 season last Saturday night when he received his UMP DIRTcar Racing Super Late Model national championship check and trophy during the organization's awards banquet in Springfield, Ill.

So what's next for the rising star from Bloomington, Ill. His first-ever winter racing trip to Florida, an excursion highlighted by six nights of Super Late Model action during the 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park.

Feger, 31, will test his considerable skills at the half-mile oval outside Daytona Beach in four UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned events (Feb. 8, 9, 10, 12) and two World of Outlaws Late Model Series programs (Feb. 11 and 13) that open the national tour's 2010 schedule.

“I'm pretty anxious to get down there,” said Feger, who left the recent UMP DIRTcar gala with $32,700 in points-fund cash, including 20-grand for winning his first career national title. “All of the best in the business will be there, so it's definitely gonna be a measuring stick to show where we're at.”

Coming off a campaign that saw him win a UMP DIRTcar- and career-best 23 features at 13 different tracks in four states, Feger certainly brings a growing reputation to Volusia's week-long blockbuster. But he'll also be tackling one of the country's most competitive Super Late Model meets for the first time since entering the division in 2002.

Feger has previously experienced the DIRTcar Nationals atmosphere, but only as a high-profile crewman. Two years ago he provided a helping hand during the week to his buddy from the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals trail, Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., giving him an up-close taste of what it takes to speed around the sprawling track.

“I think that year I was (at Volusia) with Jeep is gonna help me a lot,” said Feger, whose 2009 season included his first-ever WoO LMS A-Main triumph on May 24 at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis. “It looks like a challenging place and has a lot of unique characteristics, and I know that with so many good cars there it's gonna be tough if your car's not right and your stuff's not good. But I like fast racetracks and feel like I learned a lot just by watching (while working with VanWormer), and hopefully that will translate to success on the track.”

Feger's long-awaited chance to kick off his racing season in the Sunshine State comes courtesy of Stearn Ironworks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing, the Midwestern companies that joined his family-owned team midway through the 2009 schedule. The extra sponsorship gave Feger the financial boost he needed to obtain a larger hauler and trailer (a transporter formerly used by Scott Bloomquist) and hit the road more actively.

Two cars built by Midwestern racing legend Bob Pierce will be in strapped into Feger's rig for the haul south – one a virtually-new machine with just four starts on it, the other Feger's battle-tested ‘Good Old Girl' that's two-and-a-half years old and has seen action in more than 120 events.

“We're gonna give it everything we got with our best stuff,” said Feger, who won't have to adjust to an open-tire rule for the WoO LMS events at Volusia because the UMP DIRTcar Hoosier tires he knows so well are mandatory in all DIRTcar Nationals shows. “We're not going down there to run second. We had a great run (in November) at the World Finals (charging from 19th to second in the WoO LMS 50-lapper before cutting down a tire) and that was our first time at Charlotte (Motor Speedway), so hopefully we can do the same thing (at Volusia).

“I know it would be awesome if we could get a win. To kick off the year beating the best guys in the country – man, that would mean a lot. That would sell Bob (Pierce) some cars and give me a lot of notoriety.”

Feger should say more notoriety, because, win or lose, he figures to attract plenty of attention throughout his visit to Volusia Speedway Park. He's one of the hippest, most gregarious drivers currently on the dirt Late Model scene, his car sports a cool color scheme and ‘tumbling dice' graphics, he sells trendy apparel and he displays a hard-charging driving style (he's not called the ‘Highside Hustler' for nothing).

With a unique first-time promotion for this year's DIRTcar Nationals providing all ticket-buyers an opportunity to sign into the pits each night at no additional charge, a steady procession of fans will undoubtedly make their way to Feger's trailer. You can bet that he'll be accommodating to every last one of them – after all, he succinctly summed up his feelings toward his supporters during the speech he delivered to a packed ballroom upon accepting his 2009 UMP DIRTcar national championship laurels.

“It can't be possible without the fans – that's absolutely positive,” Feger said near the end of his heartfelt banquet remarks, which stretched for more than 20 minutes. “They buy your t-shirts, they fill (tracks') stands. We all gotta do what we can in this day and age for the fans, and I'm fortunate I have a lot of really good ones.

“I work really hard at (fan relations) – I try to treat them good, and I try to put on a show. Sometimes it's hard to determine if you're in the entertainment business or the racing business, but it's always really great when you can get the support of the fans because of what you do.”

The DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH begin on Feb. 2 and run nightly through Feb. 13. Joining the Super Late Models on the schedule are the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series (Feb. 5-7); the Super DIRTcar Series for big-block Modifieds (Feb. 10-13); the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series (Feb. 3-4); and the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds (Feb. 2-9).

As modern-day dirt Late Model champions go, Jason Feger seems to have come straight from central casting. He has all the marketable qualities -- steely desire and dedication (he's steadily built his family back operation from humble beginnings), exciting style (he's not called the "Highside Huster" for nothing), youthfulness (he's just 31), bubbling personality (he's always approachable and accommodating) and a dose of hipness (cool race car graphics, trendy apparel, the occasional mohawk hairdo and a team that's not afraid to party and have fun).

It's no surprise, then, that after winning his first career UMP DIRTcar Racing Super Late Model national championship in 2009, Feger has become the poster boy of the Midwestern-based sanctioning body. He even hails from Bloomington, Illinois, right in the heart of UMP Late Model Country.

Feger will blush at the notion that he's now the face of UMP, but it's a fact. A driver doesn't put together one of the most spectacular season in circuit history -- a UMP -leading 23 feature wins at an astonishing 13 different tracks in fours states -- and end the two-year national title reign of a hard-nosed owner-operator like Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Illinois without turning into the It Guy of the moment.

A winner of UMP DIRTcar's Most Improved Driver Award in 2008 after finishing a then career-best third in the national points standing, Feger got a taste of his new found celebrity status when he made some late-season trips to tracks outside his usual realm.

"A lot of fans came up to talk to me and I heard a lot of compliments,"Feger said. "So you realize that winning the championship is a pretty big deal." The way Feger secured the prestigious $20,000 crown, of course made him a deserving recipient of widespread acclaim. He's not only a home-grown UMP talent who started his racing career in the Sportsman division before moving to the seat of a dirt Late Model in 2002, but also the driver who finally took down the 37-year-old Erb, aka the "One Man Band" an impeccably consistent racer whom many observers thought would remain atop the UMP Late Model work in 2009 sweeping the organizations Summernationals tour and national titles for an unprecedented third consecutive season. To be The Man you have to beat The Man, ant that's what Feger did in '09.

"I think beating Dennis really makes the championship more special," said Feger, who bested Erb by 31 points in a national battle that was determine using drivers' best 40 finishes/points night of the season. "A lot of people know how good Dennis is. He's good in the big shows and can win against anybody, and he's definitely the guy to beat around here. Whenever you roll into a racetrack -- especially for the last three years -- night in and night out, Dennis is the guy you know you're gonna have to beat to win. You very rarely see that guy [finish] out of the top five.

"Racing against Dennis makes you focus to really stay up on your game. He's a competitor who hates to lose, so I think people know [the title] wasn't given to us or anything. We had to earn it."

Erb certainly got a little too close for Feger's comfort heading down the homestretch of UMP points race. While Feger never relinquished the top spot in the standings after grabbing it late in the summer, Erb pulled within seven points in late September with just two weekends of weekly points action remaining. Then Feger's two bouts with bad luck the last weekend in September -- a flat tire struck him leading at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway and more trouble knocked him from the lead the next night at Shepp's Speedway in Alexander, Illinois - left him wondering if all his success in '09 might not be enough to dethrone Erb.

"After those races at Peoria and Shepp's, I started getting stressed out, " said Feger who found himself thinking of points possibilities morning, noon and night. "It was tougher than I ever thought it would be and got us worrying a little bit. You don't want to give a guy like Erb any extra chances because he can take advantage of 'em."

But Feger came through under pressure, rolling through the final weekend of weekly points racing with three consecutive victories in October 2 - 4 at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Illinois, Lincoln (IL) Speedway and Shepp's to clinch the title. He was able to make the points-season-ending UMP DIRTcar Nationals the following weekend at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, his championship coronation rather than a pressure-packed weekend.

Finally, Erb was out of Feger's hair, though even with the title decided, Erb didn't stray far from Feger's mind. Feger, after all, feels honored to follow Erb as the UMP Late Model national champion since he sees a bit of himself in the gritty veteran. The tow drivers have decidedly different personalities -- while Feger is talkative and outgoing, Erb tends to be quiet and reserve -- and aren't especially friendly with each other, but they have scratched and clawed their way to the top of UMP DIRTcar Racing in much the same manner.

"i have a lot of respect for him," Feger says of Erb. "I feel like the way he's done it is kinda the way I've done it. He's a self made guy who's worked his but off to get where he is.

"I probably have a little more help in the pit [crew] department than him, but we come from the same ranks."

Indeed, Feger and his family have slowly-but-surely assembled a championship-caliber operation. His entire rise has come driving Late Models under the banner of Feger Brother Racing (that's Jason and his 29-year-old brother/crew chief Austin), though he creits his more recent associations with the chassis builder and former UMP Late Model national champion Bob Pierce (Feger began running Pierce cars midway through the 2007 season), powerplant constructor Ryhne Engines and sponsors Stearn Ironworks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing (who signed on midway through the 2009 seasons) with giving him that final push into the promised land.

"To be kind of self-made and win the championship is a big deal in my mind," says Feger, who works for his family's Absolute Apparel business when he's not racing (or getting ready to race) more than 80 nights a seson. "it's not like we just had somebody give us money and we went out and used it. We've gotten our program really built up over time. "it's definitely tough to di it this way. It's a lot of hard work , but we're proof it can be done."

The future appears incredibly bright for Feger, whose entry into the limelight in 2009 puts him near the top of every one's list of potential national stars capable of carrying the dirt Late Model division for years to come.

Anyone who might wonder whether Feger has the good to excell beyond the hardscrabble weekend wars of the UMP circuit need only look at some of his recent performances on the big stages. For instance, Fege bascially announced his 2009 intentions in March when he drove by such luminaries as Billy Moyer, Steve Francis and Shannon Babb to win the 40-lap March Madness feature at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Kentucky, a vitory he calls "a turning point" in his burgeoning career.

Two months later, on May 24 at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Feger tossed his trademark "tumbling dice" number 25 around the outside lane for 40 laps to register his first-ever triumph in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main. It was another checkered flag that added to his growing stature.

"I had never been to Beaver Dam before, so to be able to show up and beat those Outlaw guys was an incredible feeling," says Feger, whose previous best finish in a limited World of outlaws starts was a fourth in the 2008 Pepsi Nationals at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri. "I really like racing with those guys and I have a whole lot of respect for them. "I just hope that win gives them a little more respect for me -- you know, solidifies me a little more in their minds."

Feger closed out his '09 campaign with a memorable heat-race charge to qualify for October's Dirt Track World Championship at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway and just two weeks late, an outing at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, that likely raised his national profile to an even higher level. With a packed house of over 14,000 fans looking on during the Friday-night World of Outlaws World Finals 50-lapper, Feger made a stirring, cushion-pounding assault on the tour-tenths-mile oval that took him from the 19th starting spot to second place -- and the bring of passing eventual winner Scott Bloomquist -- before a flat tire did him in with just ten laps remaining. Feger's run at The Dirt Track so endeared him to the crowd, he sold enough t-shirts at his trailer the following day to pay his tire bill for the weekend.

In addition, Feger has been a force in Eldora's recent crown-jewel shows, qualifing for the World 100 in 2007 and 2008 and the $1000,000 Dream in 2009. He was one of just 12 drivers to qualify for all three of those UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned events.

Does his success against national-caliber competition give him the confidence that he can strike out on the road and make a profitable living as a dirt Late Model driver? You bet it does, although he also still understands that has plenty left to learn.

"Talent-wise, I feel I can go out and run with the best guys in the country," says Feger, who also won the championship of Don Hammer's UMP-sanctioned Monster Midwest Tour in 2009. "That's always been my ultimate goal - to race for a living, to run a national series like the World of Outlaws. But if I go run with the Outlaws, I know it's gonna be a learning curve for me. I know I can do it, but it would take some time to figure things out. We haven't run open tires very much.

"We definetly would need some time to make our program better (on open tires), and that means you have to have the backing to keep you out there on the road when you're struggling and learning those lessons."

Feger is getting closer to putting together the necessary backing that would allow him to test his talen - and go through the school of hard knocks - as a national touring driver, but he's not there yet. His fresh sponsorship deal with Stearn IornWorks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing provided him the chance to obtain a former Scott Bloomquist hauler and trailer to replace the conventional enclosed trailer he had been using and he plans to start his 2010 season with a February Speedweeks trip to Florida's East Bay Raceway Park and Volusia Speedway Park, but his regular -season focus will likely remain the UMP trail.

And Feger is content to continue building his reputation in the UMP Late Model divison, which happens to give an Illinois-based dirt Late Model driver like Feger more opportunities to race than virtually any other circuit in the country.

"Some people don't understand why we don't get out aways from home to race more than we do, but it's tough to leave what we have here, "says Feger, who graduated with honors from Parkland community College in Champaign, Illinois and has also completed courses at Heartland Community College and Illinois State University. "UMP country is pretty tough, and we've got a lot of pretty good tracks and races that pay decent money right around home. There's always a special somewhere in our area; I think I probably only ran five regular nights all year in (2009). "And in my opinion, UMP has the best tire deal in the country. With three compounds, you don't need many tires or many wheels. I've only got 24 rims to my name, so it's a great rule for me."

The grueling, month-long UMP Summernationals tour, which Feger began following in 2007, is the championship Feger most covets in 2010. Perhaps he could even follow in Dennis Erb's footsteps again, becoming the second driver in UMP DIRTcar history to sweep the Summernationals and national titles in the same season.

"The Summernationals is a goal," says Feger, who finished fourth in the 2009 Summernationals points standing while winning the first two tour features of his career. "And if you have a good year on the Summernationals, it's going to put you in a position for the national title. The you just have to take advantage of it."

Summernationals gloris is definitely a possibility in 2010 for Feger, who last year demonstrated the type of across the board speed and versatility that's necessary to achieve success on the series.

"[In 2008] I was good at my certain tracks, most the the fast, high-banked places," says Feger. "We had a good setup for places like Paducah (KY), Farmer City (IL) and Boswell (Indian's Kamp Motor Speedway), but we lacked something when we went to other places. We made some huge strides in that department [in 2009] - especially with the help of Pierce - and that's why we were able to win at so many different tracks."

Feger is also figuring out how to balance his instinct to charge, charge, charge with a calmer, smarter approach. "I'm not a points racer," says Feger. "I like to win races. For eight years in a Late Model, I've only driven one way. I try to get to the front and get everything I can out of my equipment. I'm always gonna run as hard as I can, but I'm learning to be more patient and not take all the chances I'd normally take." The Highside Hustler isn't going anywhere. He's just refining his distinctive style in order to win more races and more championships.

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Jan. 9, 2010 – Rising Midwestern stars Jason Feger and Gary Cook Jr. saw their dreams meet reality during Saturday night's 26th annual UMP DIRTcar Racing ‘Night of Champions' Awards Banquet inside the Springfield Crowne Plaza Hotel's ballroom.

Feger, 31, of Bloomington, Ill., was saluted for his spectacular 2009 season, which saw him win his first UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model national championship – ending the two-year reign of Carpentersvile, Ill.'s Dennis Erb Jr. – lead the circuit with 23 feature wins and capture the UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned Monster Midwest Series title. The homegrown talent's success earned him a total of $32,700 in points-fund checks during the gala evening.

Over 750 attendees from more than a dozen states and Canada filled the ballroom to watch UMP DIRT Racing officials distribute over $400,000 to the organization's 2009 champions and top performers.

An approachable racer known for his outgoing personality, Feger surprised no one when he accepted his championship laurels with a heartfelt, banquet-ending speech that stretched for more than 20 minutes. He spent much of his time behind the podium thanking the people who made his championship season possible, including his crew – led by his younger brother Austin, who earlier in the night was named the 2009 UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model Mechanic of the Year by vote of the organization's membership – mother, grandmother, chassis builder Bob Pierce, engine builder Matt Rhyne and long list of sponsors.

Feger had especially kind words for Pierce, the legendary racer whose chassis Feger has used for the past two-and-half years.

“It's such an honor to race with my childhood hero and help make his business succeed,” Feger said of Pierce. “You can't imagine how much that means to me.”

After posing for photos with his close-knit team, Feger reflected on his career campaign.

“Earlier today I did a radio show at the Speed Expo (at the nearby Illinois State Fairgrounds) with Larry Lembeck and he kind of put (the national title) in perspective for me,” said Feger, who won the championship one year after being named UMP DIRTcar's Most Improved Driver. “He started naming off some of the guys who have won this deal and the history behind it, and that really made it sink in for me. To be able to be listed with a group of guys like Gary Webb, Erb, (Randy) Korte, (Rodney) Melvin and a lot of others – that's pretty impressive to me.

“Just to think that someday down the road somebody is gonna look back and see my name on this list (of UMP DIRTcar champions) – I hope they can have the same respect for me that I have for the guys who have won it.”

Feger's points-fund earnings were topped by the $20,000 he received for the national title. He picked up another $5,000 for winning Don and Bonnie Hammer's Monster Midwest Series, plus $5,000 for finishing fourth in the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals points standings; $2,000 for placing second in the Central Region points battle; and $700 for fourth place in the Northern Allstars Late Model Series points standings. Feger also received two sets of Dyer's Top Rods for his national and Monster Midwest Series titles.

The only driver who left the banquet with more points-fund cash than Feger was Erb, who collected a total of $38,100 despite failing to three-peat as national champion. He still earned $25,000 for winning his third consecutive UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals title; $10,000 for finishing second in the national points standings; $2,000 for a runner-up placing on the Northern Allstars Late Model Series; $700 for fourth place on the Monster Midwest Series; and $400 for sixth place in the Central Region.

Following a 2009 campaign that saw over 10,000 drivers earn points, all eight 2009 national champions wore their crowns for the first time.

at the North-South 100, where he made up a straightaway deficit the final six laps to stun Don O’Neal at Florence (Ky.) Speedway on Aug. 8. What was Mars thinking? "Oh my god, this is going to happen on the last lap. And it did for his second $50,000 payday in an eight-day stretch.

2) Jason Feger
at Eldora Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway and Lawrenceburg Speedway, where he daringly showed again and again why he’s called the Highside Hustler. Mark Richards of Rocket Chassis called Feger’s heat race victory at Eldora’s Dream XV, “most impressive cushion run I’ve ever seen.”

3) Randle Chupp
at Golden Isles Speedway’s Super Bowl V finale, where he went worst-to-first in a 50-lapper for a $10,000 victory against a stacked 24-car field that included six World 100 winners. "I wasn't going to be denied, said Chupp, who had started on the pole the previous two nights.

4) Jimmy Owens
at Eldora Speedway’s Dream XV, where he went from third-to-first on the 73rd lap passing Scott Bloomquist and Tony Stewart - and then survived smoke-signaled engine woes the rest of the way. “I was afraid the motor was gonna blow up any minute,” said Owens, who earned $100,000. “I finally just said, “You know what? If it blows, it blows.”

5) Brian Birkhofer
at the 17th annual Show-Me 100, where he lapped all but six drivers and won by more than three-quarters of a lap in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event. "At one point tonight, I didn't realize I was that far ahead, so it may have gotten boring for the crowd ... but believe me, I was trying my hardest,” said Birkhofer, who earned $40,000.

Feger Race Car Party 2009
As most of you know, this Saturday night is the annual Feger Racing party. Every year this event continues to grow and this year is no exception with some of the coolest, one of a kind items being put up for bid. I mentioned before about our good friend Jeff from "The Stain and Paint Shop" putting together some 'over the top' goodies for this years bash. Now I have to tell you that these pictures really don't do Jeff's work justice but I wanted to give everyone a sneak peak at his work...

In person this plaque has an almost 3-D effect, the car is literally coming at you. Jeff put a lot of work into this and it really shows. This will be a neat treasure for some lucky bidder.

And here is one of the coolest items EVER at a race party...a full size bar/entertainment center patterned after Team Feger's world famous pit cart. Now while it is painted white at the moment, a full wrap will be applied emulating the original cart that the team uses to do battle. Truly a one of a kind piece that once again shows off Jeff's talent.

CONCORD, N.C. (Nov. 6) Everywhere he goes, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., gets fans excited when he finds a high groove no other driver can. Last month it was during a Dirt Track World Championship heat race in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Friday it was during the opening feature of the World of Outlaws World Finals at the Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The 31-year-old Feger, who clinched his first career UMP DIRTcar points title a month ago, reached Scott Bloomquist's rear bumper on lap 40 after electrifying the huge crowd with an outside charge from the 19th starting spot to second in his Pierce car. Alas, his charge fell short when a flat left-rear tire forced Feger to slow and bring out a caution flag, leaving Bloomquist home free for the remainder of the distance.

The driver nicknamed the Highside Hustler impressed observers with his performance just two days after laying eyes on the 4/10-mile Lowe's oval for the first time, but an untimely flat tire robbed him of a shot at a popular upset victory.

I was trying to be smooth - as smooth as you could be in that cushion, - said Feger, who came back to finish sixth. "But when it's choppy like that, it's hard for these tires to stay under you.

We got right to his back bumper there in (turns) three and four, and then the next lap is when the tire just disintegrated. It just wasn't our night, but me and the guys are happy that we're up to speed. I think we showed what we have.

Bloomquist, who earned $10,000 for his third straight Friday-night victory at the World Finals, knew that Feger's charge carried a calculated risk. If Jason was closing, I'm sure he was just wide open on the top, - he said. - I don't think he cut a tire; I think he jerked it off the wheel. That's the kind of chances you take (running the cushion).

Turned some heads and made some new fans.
The trip to North Carolina had some ups and downs and while it wasn't the most profitable of trips in terms of dollars won, a lot of new fans were converted by the high flying act that calls itself "Team Feger."

With the weekend starting off with a busted up race car and a DNQ for the topless event, Team Feger turned there misfortunes around and left their mark on the fans at the Lowe's dirt track.

Friday nights 19th to 2nd run in the feature was the talk of the town and it would have been amazing had the left rear tire decided to cooperate. We all know how that deal worked out.

Saturday's run in the feature wasn't quite as dramatic however I believe Jason still passed more cars than anyone this weekend. Feger had moved up to ninth before an oil leak sidelined the #25 car with a lap to go.

So, another learning experience in the books and a little more t.v. time for Team Feger.

Quote of the weekend goes to Scott Bloomquist. When asked about Feger closing in on him in Friday's feature, Scott responded with "I'm sure if Jason was coming he had to be WIDE OPEN on the top..."
Yep.

Carolina bound...
After a successful testing session on Monday, Team Feger is headed south to compete in The World of Outlaws 'World Finals' at The Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC.

The weekend gets an early kick start on Wednesday November 4th with the Topless Showdown (nope... ain't gonna touch that one) 50 lap feature with up to $30,000 to win depending on passing bonuses of $1000 per position.

Team Feger will then be competing in the 3 day "World Finals" event throughout the weekend.

UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model National Champ Jason Feger Heads For Lowe's Motor Speedway To Top Off Spectacular Season

— Jason Feger won't be an anonymous first-time visitor to The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway when he drives through the pit gate for the postponed Topless Showdown by Hungry Man (Nov. 4) and the World of Outlaws World Finals (Nov. 5-7).

Once a driver wins a prestigious title, after all, he becomes impossible to overlook.

So it is with Feger, a 31-year-old from Bloomington, Ill., who is heading for the big stage of The Dirt Track to top off a spectacular 2009 season that saw him emerge as the UMP DIRTcar Racing Super Late Model national champion.

“Since we won the championship we've gone to some tracks where fans have never seen us much before,” said Feger, who clinched the crown one week before the UMP DIRTcar points season ended with the organization's Nationals on Oct. 9-10 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. “A lot of fans came up to talk to me and I heard a lot of compliments, so you realize that winning the championship is a pretty big deal. More people know who you are.”

Feger figures to find himself in much the same situation at The Dirt Track. With his national title and 23 feature wins (at a remarkable 13 different tracks in four states) stamping him as one of the country's most successful dirt Late Model drivers in '09, he'll have plenty of eyes focused on him throughout the four days of competition for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

Yes, expectations will be high for Feger, but he's ready for the challenge. Though this will be the first time he's ever seen the gorgeous four-tenths-mile oval in person, he plans to do his best to live up to the hype.

“I'm going to run as hard as I can, just like I always do,” said Feger, a personable racer whose distinctive style has earned him the nickname the ‘Highside Hustler.' “Everybody I talk to (about The Dirt Track) says I'm gonna like it, so that makes me feel good about going there. But if we're gonna do well we have to make the right decisions on tires (compounds) – that's what it's gonna come down to.

“We've had a great season in our area but this is going to be a whole new deal for us,” he continued. “We'll be running against the best drivers in the country, so it's going to be a real test. Talent-wise I feel I can go down there and run with them because we've done it this year around home, but when those guys come out here (to the Midwest) they play by our rules (using UMP DIRTcar Hoosier tires). It's a different story (during the World Finals) – we'll be on open tires, so you know it's gonna be a learning curve.

“We need to get better (running) on open tires. We haven't done that too much, and that's one of the reasons we want to go to Charlotte. We're trying to learn more and make our program better.”

Feger has certainly mastered the tough UMP DIRTcar circuit. Now in his eighth season behind the wheel of a dirt Late Model after excelling in UMP DIRTcar Sportsman action, Feger went from being named UMP DIRTcar's Most Improved Driver in 2008 to national champion in '09.

And Feger reached the promised land after a dramatic late-season showdown for the $20,000 points title with 37-year-old Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., who was bidding to sweep the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour and national championships for the third consecutive season. Feger held off Erb down the stretch to win the crown by 31 points.

“I think beating Dennis really makes the championship more special,” said Feger, who finished third in the 2008 national points battle. “A lot of people know how good Dennis is. He's good in the big shows and can win against anybody, and he's definitely the guy to beat around here. Whenever you roll into a racetrack – especially for the last three years – night and night out, Dennis is the guy you know you're gonna have to beat to win. You very rarely see that guy (finish) out of the top five.

“Racing against Dennis makes you focus to really stay up on your game. He's a competitor who hates to lose, so I think people know (the title) wasn't given to us or anything. We had to earn it.”

Feger feels honored to follow Erb as the UMP DIRTcar national champion since he sees a bit of himself in the gritty owner-operator known as the ‘One Man Band.' The two drivers have decidedly different personalities – while Feger is talkative and outgoing, Erb tends to be quiet and reserved – but they have scratched and clawed their way to the top of UMP DIRTcar Racing in much the same manner.

“I have a lot of respect for him,” Feger said of Erb. “I feel like the way he's done it is kinda the way I've done it. He's a self-made guy who's worked his butt off to get where he is. I probably have a little more help in the pit (crew) department than him, but we come from the same ranks.”

Indeed, Feger and his family have slowly-but-surely assembled a championship-caliber operation. His entire rise has come driving Late Models under the banner of Feger Brothers Racing (that's Jason and his 29-year-old brother/crew chief Austin), though he credits his more recent associations with chassis builder Bob Pierce (Feger began running Pierce cars midway through the 2007 season), powerplant constructor Rhyne Engines and sponsors Stearn Ironworks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing with giving him that final push.

“To be kind of self-made and win the championship is a big deal in my mind,” said Feger, who works for his family's Absolute Apparel business when he's not racing (or getting ready to race) more than 80 nights a season. “It's not like we just had somebody give us money and we went out and used it. We've gotten our program really built up over time.

“It's definitely tough to do it this way,” he added. “It's a lot of hard work, but we're proof it can be done.”

Now Feger will try to continue his success story this week in front of a packed Lowe's Motor Speedway grandstand and a national television audience on the SPEED cable network, which will televise the World Finals Late Model/Sprint Car doubleheader on Saturday (Nov. 7) starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Considering his '09 resume, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Feger make some noise at The Dirt Track with his green-and-white, ‘tumbling dice' No. 25. He's excelled on some pretty big stages this season – he won a heat race for June's UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned $100,000 Dream at Eldora, thrilled the fans with outside charges during qualifying for the Dirt Track World Championship last month at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway and, of course, scored his first career WoO LMS triumph with a flawless flag-to-flag run on May 24 at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis.

Feger lists his WoO LMS victory, which came in a race co-sanctioned by UMP DIRTcar (both entities are owned by the World Racing Group), as a career highlight and confidence-booster heading into the World Finals.

“I had never been to Beaver Dam before, so to be able to show up and beat those Outlaw guys was an incredible feeling,” said Feger, who has entered four WoO LMS events this season. “I really like racing with those guys and I have a whole lot of respect for them. I just hope that win gives them a little more respect for me – you know, solidifies me a little more in their minds.”

Team Feger 2009 Monster Midwest Champions.
Korey sent down the official word that the Monster Midwest Series has ended it's 2009 season and Team Feger has added another title to the list of accomplishments. With eight series victories in 2009, Jason won the title by a 62 point margin over second place Ryan Unzicker. It sure would have been nice to run for the $10,000 that was supposed to be the season finale but I guess Mother Nature had other plans.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that Team Feger officially wins the "Monster" title on Halloween weekend?
(Yeah, I was reaching a bit for that one.)

As I mentioned earlier, our buddy Jeff from 'The Stain Shop' has been working on a very special piece for the 2009 race car party. Jeff is quite the woodworker and he is putting together a special version of Team Feger's pit cart that will be going home with one lucky bidder.
Now it's long been known that hands down, Feger has the coolest pit cart in dirt racing...even if the stripper pole that was originally in the design never made it past the drawing board.
Jeff's version of the cart is more of a home bar/entertainment center. While still a work in progress, the entire unit is hand crafted with many neat features and when finished will have a wrap emulating the original cart. This will be a one of a kind piece and we are all very excited to see how it will turn out. Photos and more on this as it all comes together.

While there is no racing this weekend, Team Feger is very busy preparing for the World of Outlaws 'World Finals' November 4th through the 7th at The Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mixed results at "The Billy Bob..."
Once again a promising heat race victory led to high expectations, unfortunately the feature results were less than what Team Feger is capable of.
A decent qualifying lap had Jason starting towards the front of the heat race and he delivered the goods, passing the likes of Darrell Lanigan and Steve Francis on the way to a heat race victory. Listening to the race via The DRC, I believe it was Chris Nunn that I heard exclaim:
"That Feger is a MADMAN!!"
The elation was short lived however as tire troubles plagued the #25 car and Jason quickly resorted to defense. While the tires were all holding air this time, a wrong choice in compound on the ever changing racing surface threw Team Feger a curve ball. Pitting early, the guys made some changes making the car better however Jason was never able to be a contender.
As soon as we find someone to put up big money for spectacular heat race runs...WE ARE FRIGGIN' THERE.
The team did learn a few things from this experience and there is a short list of things that will be done different in the future.
Racing "outside the box" is gonna have some challenges.

Since Team Feger is capable of much better results...I will take a moment to razz them a little.
Kristy says you need to return someone'z back up beeper...and she wants a dollar.

Team Feger heading to Brush Creek Motorsports Complex for "The Billy Bob" $10,000 to win late model show.
With the cancellation of the Monster Midwest Show at Lincoln Speedway, Team Feger will be heading east to Peebles Ohio to compete in "The Billy Bob."
Now I have no clue who Billy Bob is but he must carry enough clout to have a 50 lap, $10,000 to win race in his honor. Here at Feger Motorsports we really don't care what you want to call a particular event as long as you print it on a great big check with lots of zero's...
I guess we're off to find Billy Bob and try to take some of his money.
Hope some of you can make the journey...

I'll have to confirm with Korey but I believe that with the cancellation of the final MMS show, Team Feger is the 2009 Monster Midwest Champion. 23 feature wins (so far) and two championships this year...not too shabby.

Feelin' like Superman on Saturday...Clark Kent on Sunday.
With all the positive talk on Saturday after heat race #5, we were all pretty stoked for Sunday's 100 lapper. Jason was moving to the front and all was going well until about lap 34 when the right rear decided it didn't want to play anymore, threw a conniption fit and made a hasty departure.
After a lot of naughty words and a scramble to put on fresh rubber, Jason rejoined the field at the tail and started a march to the front. When all was said and done, Team Feger salvaged a 14th place finish. We need to find out where Jimmy Mars gets his tires from, his go flat in victory lane.

While fourteenth was not the result the guys were hoping for, some good things did come from their trip to The Dirt Track World Championship.
After Saturday, EVERYBODY had taken notice and quite a few "names" in the business were more than impressed with Feger's heat race performance.
Racing with the caliber of talent that was present this weekend is still a big learning curve and Team Feger paid some dues.
Before the flat the #25 was fast and headed in the right direction and even though some of the big dogs still mispronounce Feger, (as long as I can remember there never has been an 's' on the end) they are having to take notice of the storm that's brewing here in the midwest.
The Feger/Pierce/Rhyne/Advanced combination has become a force to be reckoned with and as soon as the rocky relationship with R/R tires gets smoothed over ...
It will be 'GAME ON.'

I have to give a shout out to long time fans Pete, Chris and Mike Portman for watching over the Florida Chapter for us...looking forward to popping some cold ones and telling some lies at East Bay.

Highside Hustler puts on a show at Lawrenceburg

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Oct. 17) Fans at the 29th annual Dirt Track World Championship who don't often get to see Jason Feger didn't have to ask twice why he's called the Highside Hustler.

During daytime heat races at Lawrenceburg Speedway when most every driver stuck with the lower grooves, the 31-year-old Feger from Bloomington, Ill., showed everyone there was enough traction on a slick high groove to get the job done.
Feger, who recently wrapped up the $20,000 UMP DIRTcar Racing points championship while racking up more than 20 victories, got as many cheers as any heat winner with his runner-up performance in the fifth heat.

And the fans bundled up under coats, hats and mittens in the stands on a chilly afternoon weren't the only ones to notice. Plenty of Feger's competitors admired the Illinois driver's performance on the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval baked by afternoon sun.

"Did you see that Feger?" second heat winner Rick Eckert of York, Pa., asked. "That guy was up there, he was in a lane of his own. That guy's cool to watch, he really is."

For Feger, starting fourth and needing to run in the top three to advance to his first Dirt Track World Championship feature, running the high groove was a given, especially after he briefly fell back to sixth at the outset of the 15-lap prelim.

"You know where I was going to go," the Highside Hustler said later. "There wasn't much choice for me."
Feger clocked Dale McDowell's laps while running a little higher during his heat race run and figured the high groove was worth a shot even with rubber starting to build up in the lower grooves where everyone else was racing.

"Everybody kept saying it was rubbering up, but the lap times never picked up, so I figured I oughta just jump up there and see what it was," Feger said. "It was make or break and it ended up working real good.

"I got shuffled back there a little bit at the beginning; kind of a racing deal — and I had to fight my way back up. I'm just real happy to make my first Dirt Track and hopefully they can do some work on the track and get it more raceable for tomorrow."

Feger's groove choice was obvious as his Tumbling Dice No. 25 stood out in the high groove, especially when he swept past competitors exiting turns two or four. First he moved around Steve Casebolt, then took third from Scott Bloomquist and then grabbed second from polesitter Jeep Van Wormer. Ray Cook was a straightaway ahead by the time Feger got into second, and although he made up a little ground, he was fortunate to survive his only near-mistake as he once got a bit high in turns one and two.

Third-heat winner Steve Francis and sixth-heat winner Jimmy Mars were among drivers pointing to Feger's run to show that Lawrenceburg's daytime racing surface has definite possibilities of being better than the one-grooved norm.

"If they wanted to work the track a little bit (Sunday), they could end up with a really racy track," Mars said. "Even if you watched Feger there, right before my heat, he was balls to the wall up on the top and here there are guys creeping around on the rubber, and here he's passing guys out in no man's land."

Feger spends most of the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals exploring the high grooves on 25 tracks each season, so it was nothing new to do the same thing at Lawrenceburg. "I was pretty confident, just by knowing how I drive and how the track's banked," Feger said. "I knew the cushion in three and four; not really a cushion, but the little bit of moisture that was up there; I was pretty confident the whole time."

"We've still got some work to do, but we're just happy to get in the show, and tomorrow's a new day."

"HAPPY HOUR"

With rain moving the 100 lap feature to Sunday, Jason and the Fight Club will have to do battle without us this weekend. However, here's a few tidbits gleaned off the 4m (thanks Chris Nunn) and DoD.

Seventy one late models signed in and 9o% of 'em are stout cars. Qualifying had six cars on the track at a time using transponders. Drivers get to run three green flag laps with your fastest lap being your 'time.' I've seen this done at Wheatland and it is pretty cool.
Team Feger rolled out in the 5th group and qualified fourth fastest at 16.21 putting them (you guessed it) 4th on the grid for their heat. Jason's time was 18th fastest overall. While I doubt anyone will be calling the newspapers, that time was pretty darn decent when you look at the competition.
Falling back to seventh on the start Feger "put it on the fence" and put forth an outstanding effort finishing second. I spoke with Jason afterwords and he said "everyone was on the bottom and I went to the top and drove right by 'em." A report on 4m by Chris Nunn said "it was an awesome run and the crowd was going nuts." Team Feger rolls off eleventh in tomorrow's 100 lap Dirt Track World Classic

Team Feger heads to Lawrenceburg for the $50,000 to win Dirt Track World Classic.
Originally scheduled for Thursday through Saturday rain has forced the program to be ran on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend. No points racing...no shortage of top shelf talent...and a whole bunch of money on the line. Here's hoping the guys strike it rich come Sunday.

Eldora Fall Nationals
ELDORA...Team Feger is really starting to have a love/hate relationship with that place.
The day started out great with Jason's qualifying time being fast overall and just 3/10ths of a second off a new track record.
Won the heat.
Finished second in the "Race of Champions."
Then came the feature. Starting sixth on the grid, Jason quickly moved into fourth place. With passing at a premium it was pretty much a given that a slider was brewing. Unfortunately Jason drove it in a little 'hot' and caught a bit of wall resulting in (you guessed it) a flat right rear tire.

Fall Nationals at Eldora Speedway.
With the UMP championship wrapped up, Team Feger heads to Eldora Speedway for the upcoming weekend. Not only is Team Feger guaranteed a starting spot in the main event due to winning the UMP points, they will also be competing in the "Race of Champions" event as well. Hopefully the provisional will not be necessary but if you do make the trip to support the guys, they will be in the show.
**Rain has cancelled Friday's events at Eldora. The Fall Nationals will be ran as a one day show on Saturday.**

Taking the long way home, Sunday has the guys at Kankakee Speedway for the Fall Harvest Stock Car Festival. A 40 lap $2509 to win feature event will be the finale for the 2009 racing season at Triple K.

I was by the shop last night and with the tension of the points chase behind them, spirits were high as the guys readied both cars for this weekends activities. After the disappointment at this years World 100, redemption is in order at the "Big E."

Got a little bit of style...a little bit of class...and just enough 'Kung Fu' to kick some ass!
Team Feger has won the 2009 UMP points championship and the $20,000 paycheck that comes with it.

Heading into Sunday's "double feature" night at Shepp's Speedway, we had it figured that Jason needed to finish third or better in just one of the two feature events to clinch the national title.
After a first place finish in the heat, Team Feger took care of business early winning the first of two 25 lap features. Cue the proverbial fat lady...the run for the title was over. Not real sure how Jason finished in the second main event. Doesn't really matter now does it?

A heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to Dennis Erb Jr. If ol' Dennis the Menace wasn't such a fierce competitor and all around tough racer, this title wouldn't mean nearly as much.
Thanks for setting the bar high.

Here's a good one from last night.
As Jason was making his way back to the pits from purchasing one of those great big ice cream cones they sell on the front stretch, Austin comes running up yelling "let's go guy...your heat race is rolling out NOW!" Somehow a few seconds later Jason was on the track taking the green. After ten quick laps, he'd won the heat and was headed back to the pits to finish his cone...
didn't even let it drip once.

WHAAAAAA.....*POP *POP *POP *POP*
That is the best way to describe how the motor was sounding at the end of last night"s feature at Tri-City Speedway.

When the pill draw put the #25 car third row outside in the heat, Jason went to work and won the race by about 10 car lengths. It was quite a show as on lap seven, Feger was in second almost a full straightaway behind the leader...gotta love that Rhyne horsepower.

At the start of the $2000 to win 30 lap feature, Jason took the point with Randy "KING KONG" Korte doing everything possible to get by Feger. With the top groove being sketchy at best, both drivers were doing a tightrope act in a windstorm. Around lap 15 the battery was failing and the motor started popping down the straights, the saving grace was "Kong" had broke something in the rear suspension.
Even with both race cars being somewhat hobbled, the two were side by side off of turn four coming to the checkers. I guess half a Rhyne motor trumps a wounded gorilla as Team Feger picked up their 20th feature win of the season.
With a new battery, Team Feger is headed to Lincoln Speedway for tonight"s $2000 to win Monster Midwest show...bring your blankets.

Comment of the night goes to Jason. When I told him to remember that he was points racing and to not take too many chances, he responded with a confused look and said "points racing...what's that?"
Yeah right.

Feger wins at Lincoln.
A case of "toodamnwetandcolditus" kept us home tonight but word from the track is that Team Feger captured their 21st feature win of the season.This also marks Team Feger's 8th MMS victory as well.
From what I've been told, "Clawhammer" made it's debut in fine fashion setting fast time and winning the first feature right out of the box.
Keep that momentum rolling guys...

Well folks, a lot of racing is PLANNED over the next four days, unfortunately it looks like a lot of rain in the forcast as well.

Team Feger heads south to kick things off at Tri-City Speedway on Thursday and Friday with $2000 to win shows scheduled for both nights.
**Paducah has a Northern Allstars show on Friday as well but that would only be likely if Tri-City has rain.**

Saturday has the team at Lincoln Speedway for the $2000 to win Monster Midwest show. If Lincoln gets rained out, Tri-City is running a $2000 to win show.

Sunday has the guys at Shepp's for a pair of features at the little bullring. Double UMP points as well.

With rain in the forcast and this being the last weekend for UMP points, keep checking back as the weekend progresses and I will try to keep up with where the firesuit and his crew are headed.
If you run into any gremlins, tell them Team Feger will be at Farmer City and Fairbury.

With Kankakee Speedway being the only track that was not rained out, (it actually was but nobody told them) Team Feger headed north for a game of "dodge the lap cars."
After finishing second in the "late models on ice" heat race #2, the redraw put Jason in the second row inside starting position for the big 100 lapper...18 green flag, 82 caution laps.
After the front row was reset due to a bad start, Feger took the lead from the pole position and was never seriously challenged in the time shortened feature.

It wasn't pretty but a win is a win and more important, Team Feger regained a bit of a cushion in the UMP points battle.

Tri- City to kick off the weekend.
Looks like Jason and the daredevils will be heading south to kick off the weekend's racing at Tri- City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, IL Thursday for a $2000 to win UMP special. The team will stay at Tri- City for the $2000 to win Monster Midwest show on Friday as well.

Saturday's plans are yet undecided as both Tri- City and Peoria have UMP specials. As soon as a decision is made, we'll get it updated on here.

Team Feger is headed to Kankakee Motor Speedway for the Friday night show.
Saturday's plan is to be in Peoria Il. for the $6000 to win, 100 lap "State Championship" race. According to officials at Peoria Speedway, if the show is rained out on Saturday the event will be ran on Sunday. Racing is early starting at 5pm.

"Clawhammer" update.
The new car is very close to completion with plans of having it in the box this weekend. The game plan is to stick with "Split Lip" for now (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) but the new car will be there...just in case.
I gotta tell you that along with Bob Pierce, Feger Bros. Racing does build a nice race car.

Hopefully the rain will stay away and Team Feger can do some 'damage' this go 'round.
Oh wait a minute, I was told not to say anything that might jinx the guys this weekend...

Weekend "LAST CALL"

A lot of travel for a little bit of racing.
Unfortunately, with Mother Nature putting the kibosh on most of the weekend's activities, I did find out a few things this weekend that I really didn't need or want to know.

#1. Bob Sargent doesn't ALWAYS prepare a perfect track. While I will give Bob all the credit he deserves on his track prep, this weekend was a bit off at PIR. Either the top never slowed down or the bottom never got any faster, passing was at a premium.

#2. On one of the few nights that a Sargent track is one lane, that is sure to be the night that the #25 car would have a flat tire and have to come from the tail. After doing his best to repaint the right side "Paducah Speedway White," Jason put on a heck of a charge rallying from last place on lap 13 to salvage a fifth place finish. Feger and fourth finishing Erb did have a great race going on between them for the last 15 laps or so, with Jason showing him the nose on several occasions. Jason capped off the run with a last lap slider in one and two that set up a drag race down the backstretch, however Erb managed to get Jason at the line.
With Team Feger's strong comeback in the feature, they were able to do some damage control only allowing Dennis to gain 3 markers in the UMP points chase.

#3. A Wal-Mart in Missouri is no different than a Wal-Mart in Illinois. Target, Shoe Carnival and most Harley Davidson stores don't differ much either.

#4. This goes along with #3. Waiting to see if rain is going to cancel the races is NEVER fun. Even if there are strippers, midgets, clowns and a gambling boat...rain outs still suck.

#5. As for the UMP national title chase, being a Chicago Bears fan and a Jason Feger fan have a lot in common...it's gonna come right down to the end of the game.

So, with three great shows on the schedule and then I-55 and Lasalle falling to rain, the weekend was kind of anti-climatic.
At least the Bears won.

One last thing, I've got to give a shout out to Luke, president of the Nashville, Tennessee chapter of the Feger Fan Club. Thanks for taking care of business in the Music City for us.

Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shinin'...
Now that the frustration of last weekend is behind us, Team Feger is looking forward to PIR as a kick off to a big racing weekend. Hoping to become the back-to-back winner of the Wayne Coakley Memorial, Jason and the team have "Split Lip" repaired and ready to go. (It's amazing how hard 6 laps at Eldora can be on a race car.)

Saturday has the guys at I-55 in Pevely Mo. for the $10,000 to win Pepsi Nationals.
I-55 has not been kind to the boys as of late, however last year's run at this event was impressive as Jason came from deep in the field to finish fourth against some powerhouse teams.
I've finally got Andy and Brie talked into making the trip, Cheeseburger is talking about heading down as well, so come on down and join the posse.

Fall Nationals at Lasalle this Sunday.
As if those first two shows aren't enough, the $7000 to win Fall Nationals at Lasalle Speedway should offer up a nice nightcap to the weekend's activities. The show at Lasalle is scheduled to start a bit early, I believe racing at 6pm. Plus it's a Bob Sargent show so it will be over at a decent hour... don't let a Sunday show keep you from going racing and supporting Team Feger.

UMP National Points update.
Jason and crew are still holding onto a slim 10 point lead in the UMP national points ranking, this is a "make it or break it" weekend for the team as far as the whole points battle is concerned.
Nothing against that Erb guy but c'mon Jason...kick his ass.
It's time for a changing of the guard.

Not much racing left in 09' so I hope to see you all somewhere this weekend.

I think we all became a bit complacent and expected Jason to be in the show...we forgot how humbling that place can be.
I think I'll take a bit of a 'copout' this time and say "what happens in Eldora stays in Eldora." (Sure wouldn't want to bring home any of this weekend's "mojo" anyway.)

On the lighter side,I was by the shop tonight and asked Jason how I should sum things up.
His reply... "Just say the driver went into turn one and ran out of talent."

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
The weekend provided some great racing and some frustrating moments for Team Feger. But I guess if it was easy, it wouldn't be cool.

Peoria Speedway's $5000 to win Thursday special show. Setting overall fast time and winning an exciting heat race over Shannon Babb, things were looking good for the feature.
Unfortunately, a rare miscue on tire selection put Jason on defense as he struggled to keep the car down on the "bottom fast" track. Searching all over the track for a quick line other than the hub, Jason searched to no avail. Salvaging a sixth place finish, the guys readied themselves for the big racing weekend ahead.
On a personal note, I've got to give a big THANK YOU to our buddy Tom and his crew for saving us the great seats!!

Farmer City 50 Monster Midwest show.
A second place qualifying run put Team Feger on the pole of the second heat, which Jason used as a tune up session for the big show.
Get the popcorn ready.
Starting the feature on the outside front row, it only took turns one and two to decide who was going to control the pace. A little door banging with pole sitter Darren Miller for effect, then it was time to roll out. Feger "walked the dog" opening up a half a lap lead midway through the race, but Babb was coming and a late race caution put Shannon on Jason's back bumper.
I was a bit worried as Babb is the last guy you want to tangle with at Farmer City and he was flying before the caution. On the restart Feger would not be denied, quickly reclaiming a straightaway lead over the hard charging Babb.
Something about a victory at Farmer City tastes a little sweeter, beating the likes of Moyer, Babb, Miller and Erb makes it even more so.
The "Dirty 30" victory lap was a classic for those that remember.

Moment of the night goes to the other seven drivers that were in the redraw in front of the grandstand. When Jason drew the outside front row starting position, there was an audible groan/sigh as they suddenly realized second place money was all that would be up for grabs.

Fairbury Speedway's "Prairie Dirt Classic."
After the showing at Farmer City, we were all anticipating a strong run at the $10,000 to win Prairie Dirt Classic. After a 15th place qualifying effort(?) the invert went Jason's way putting Team Feger on the pole of the heat race. That's when it got ugly. Running in second place and challenging for the lead...a little puff of smoke ended the night for Feger Racing.
Broken camshaft.
The guys tried to complete a motor swap in time for a "banzai run" in the consi but it wasn't meant to be. For the first time in 2009, Team Feger was on the trailer before the main event. The sad part of it is, the race track was totally a Feger race track...hammer down against the fence.
Even with the frustration, Team Feger upheld their standards, the party around the hauler was as if Jason had won the show.
Win lose or draw, the guys don't disappoint... and the Jello shots provided by "Mr. Turn Four" were killers as well!

Quote of the night goes to Rodney Unzicker. As my wife, Kim and I walked past the Unzicker's tailgate party, we wished them good luck. With an evil smile, Rodney replied, "If you see the Fegers, tell them we've got their "Jungle Juice."
Austin has been bragging this stuff up for a while now and man was it tasty. Plus after a couple of glasses, the mind erasing effects helped make the evening seem not quite as bad.

Lincoln Speedway Monster Midwest $2000 to win Labor Day special.
With the wounds from Saturday night still fresh. Team Feger rolled into Lincoln Speedway with two things on their minds, kicking ass and chewing gum...and they were all out of gum.
After winning the heat and drawing a fourth place starting spot for the feature, the stage was set. It only took a handful of laps for Jason to claim the top spot and from that point he was counting laps until the finish. I can't recall how many cars were on the lead lap at the finish, but it wasn't many.(I told you he would win it Chad...)
Gotta' love a driver that's hungry.
This was Team Feger's seventh Monster Midwest feature win of the season and with it, they stretched out their point lead a bit over second place Ryan Unzicker.

Quote of the night goes to Jason. When Don Hammer asked Jason how he felt about shortening the feature to 30 laps from the usual 40, Jason replied "Why don't you ask me that on lap 29..."

Feger Racing welcomes Stearn Ironworks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing to the Team.

Ain't it funny how things work out?
Back in Jason's sportsmen days, one of his fiercest competitors was Ryan McQueary. At that time there was no love lost between the two and lets just say the two never exchanged Christmas cards.
Skip forward about six years. While both drivers moved up to late models, Ryan curtailed his driving career a few seasons ago to focus on family and business. Even though he wasn't driving, I would often see the McQueary's, Ryan, his brother Chad and their father Bob at various tracks from East Bay to Peoria and many places in between. It gets in your blood.
We all spent a lot of time watching Jason's career take off.
While Jason is starting to make things happen for himself in the racing world, The McQueary's have been hard at work in the business world.
Enter Stearn Ironworks and Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing, two family owned businesses that work in conjunction with one another. Chad put things in a nutshell..."Jaxon Chase tells us what and how to build it, then Stearn Ironworks handles the manufacturing. The companies work together to produce items such as structural beams, columns, stairs, handrails...all sorts of things."
As I mentioned before, racing gets in your blood. With the businesses established, Ryan, Bob and Chad felt the time was right to re-involve themselves in the sport.
One time rivals are now the freshest ink on the Team Feger #25, occupying space on both quarter panels. I asked Ryan why they decided to go with Jason. " I've been watching Jason for years and I always thought he had a lot of talent, he just needed some financial backing to help take his program to the next level. Our goal is to help him get to that next level. We're in this for the long term and if things go as planned, what we've done so far is just the tip of the iceburg."

Great news for Team Feger, not only do they have new advertising partners on the car, they have new partners that UNDERSTAND racing. Now it's up to Jason and the team to to get Stearn, Jaxon Chase and all the fine folks listed on the right as much exposure as possible.

Weekend "ON TAP"

Looks like Korey has Team Feger staying close to home this weekend. Thursday thru Sunday has the guys traveling no more than 45 minutes from the compound with Peoria, Farmer City, Fairbury and Lincoln "ON TAP."
With no travel time to deal with and Team Feger never shying away from a good time, this would be a good weekend to buy stock in Anheuser -Busch.

Also, due to the length of the new rig, a driveway had to be put in at the shop. Special thanks to Wheatley Trucking for hauling in the rock in and Tony Sting...I mean Tony Strong for laying it all down. (Seems Tony got into a bee hive while moving the dirt...you do the math.)

Should be a great weekend, hope to see you at the races.

You ever have things going along just fine, then *BAM*, it all goes awry? Well, that about sums up the weekend for Team Feger.
Friday night started out great. Starting on the pole of the heat, it only took the first two corners to know how that was going to turn out as Jason cruised to an easy win. Even with some other drivers doing better with the passing points, Team Feger would start the 50 lap feature in the second row. Plenty of time to race to the front.
Then the rain came.
Races cancelled.

Saturday night at I-55 Speedway proved to be an exercise of frustration for the guys. Unloading a proven fast car and a pole starting position in the heat, things were looking good. Then a broken axle at the start of the heat relegated the 25 car to the back of the consi. Haven't had to race many of those lately. Knowing they were in line for a provisional, the team experimented with setups as the track was not it's usual self. Taking the provisional put Feger shotgun on the field...24th.
With MARS using double file restarts on cautions, there was still the possibility of a good finish if things went Jason's way.
The feature went green for 40 laps.
While Jason was able to advance ten positions and raced his tail off to do so, a 14th place finish left the guys shaking their heads in frustration. Giving back some UMP points to a third finishing Dennis Erb was not in the plan either.
The guys will "clean their wounds" and move on.

Shop Talk / Weekend "ON TAP"

Feger joins Team Zero/ Scott Bloomquist Racing!!
Just kidding. But if you were at the tracks last weekend, there were a lot of double-takes as Team Feger pulled in the pits. With a little assistance from the McQueary family, Jason bought Scott Bloomquist's used race trailer, complete with 9'x9' skull logos on the sides. It's a really nice piece and it isn't taking long for the guys to adjust to the extra space. With the capability to haul two cars and all the spare parts, it will give the team even more options throughout the season.

I was talking to Austin about the trailer. I commented that Scott won a lot of "crown jewel" events out of that hauler and that hopefully it still had some of that "mojo" left in it.
Always the optimist, Austin replied "It's already won $850 at Kankakee last Friday, does that count?"

Big motor back in the car.
Just in time for a couple of "motor" tracks. The guys have the big powerplant or as I like to call it, "The Rhyne-O," back in the car. Jason doesn't do too bad with his little motors but that big motor never stops pulling. With some of the talent they'll be up against this weekend, at least they're taking a bazooka to the gunfight.

PIR and I- 55 are "On Tap" for the weekend.
Korey has it confirmed on the schedule page. Team Feger heads south this weekend for the MARS/UMP double header at Paducah KY on Friday, and I-55 Raceway at Pevely MO on Saturday. Both events are $5000 to win and should have plenty of competition. PIR is one of the team's favorite tracks, sans flat tires. Let's just hope Hoosier can hold up to the punishment.

I-55 has also produced some good runs as of late and I highly recommend both tracks for putting on great shows.

Ump Points.
It looks like Team Feger has opened the national point lead up a little bit, now 29 points ahead of Dennis Erb Jr.
With Dennis heading south and Korte in the neighborhood, Team Feger is "locked, cocked, and ready to rock." Time to go down there and get some more of those big MARS/UMP checks.

Great weekend for Team Feger

Work and family obligations kept me away from the track and the internet this weekend, might be time to buy one of those "Blackberry" phones with all the bells and whistles...what did we do before the internet? And if they want to name a phone after something that tastes good, why don't they call it "The Pizza?"
I would of had one when they first came out.

Friday night at Kankakee Speedway
With rain cancelling the races at Farmer City, the team headed north for a night of points racing. Jason set fast time, started 8th in the fast heat, finished 3rd. Then rallied from a third starting spot to win the 25 lap feature.

Saturday Monster Midwest show at Highland
After Qualifying 2nd, and finishing second in the heat, Jason Took the lead on lap 17 and took the victory. Reports are that the track was racy throughout the night and Jason and 2nd finishing Korte put on a great show for the fans. I believe this marks Team Feger's 16th feature win of the season, and their fifth "Monster Tour" win as well.

Sunday Monster Midwest show at Quincey Raceway
Going by the results on the "MM" website, looks like a fifth place qualifying run put the 25 car outside row two of the 2nd heat. After winning the heat and drawing the pole position for the big show, it was looking like this weekend might be a clean sweep. But, apparently Mark Burgtorf had a little better run, with Jason finishing second.
Team Feger now leads the Monster Midwest points by a mere 9 markers over Ryan Unzicker.

All in all, not too bad of a weekend for the guys. We'll see how the national UMP points stack up after this weekend, but Team Feger should have maintained their slim point lead over Dennis Erb. The next few weeks will be the true test for the guys...keep that momentum going.

Shoptalk / Weekend "ON TAP"

Not much talk, but a lot of activity.
With the UMP points battle as tight as it is, everyone is focused on getting ready for the upcoming weekend. Look for Team Feger to be at Farmer City on Friday night for a regular show. Saturday is still undecided between The Northern Allstars at Lasalle, or the Monster Midwest show at Highland. Sunday, the Team will be at Quincy Raceway for night two of the Monster tour. I'll have Saturdays decision posted as soon as it's made. With Dennis gaining back some points at FALS last Saturday, Team Feger will have their game faces on this weekend. (Even though I will still try to get them to go see The Reverend Horton Heat's show after Fridays races!)

The new car, "Clawhammer," is in the shop and under construction. Still has that new race car smell to it. Once the cockpit and decking are in place, the rest should come together fairly quick. My guess would be a debut right after the World, but you never know.

Lots of neat things going on at the shop, not letting the cat out of the bag just yet, but keep your eyes open cuz' you never know what might happen!

Unfortunately, Team Feger's four race win streak has come to an end at FALS. After qualifying second overall and winning the heat, things were looking good for another strong run. After a fourth place draw for his starting spot in the field, things went well for the first few laps. Jason was running in second and pressing the leader, however, after an early caution, the car wasn't right. As the race wore on, Jason turned more and more to defense, racing hard to avoid losing positions. With two laps to go, the right rear went completely flat, forcing Jason pit side. "The car never really felt right from the start" commented Jason after the race "I wonder if that tire wasn't going down at the beginning (of the feature)."
Not to be kept down for long, Jason was all smiles as he took care of fan requests for autographs and pictures. That is one quality that I've always admired about Team Feger...they've never forgotten that the fans are the reason all of this happens.

Lots of positive comments about the blog and the website being kept current. With Tracy's workload, it's been a real pleasure for Korey and I to step in and help out. Korey Rich has been keeping the schedule/results page current. Weekend "ON TAP"

"Monster" weekend in store for Team Feger.
Friday night has the team heading to Kankakee Speedway for the Monster Midwest Show. Saturday night follows the tour right down Rt. 24 to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway. Both events pay $2000 to the winner. With the team running local this weekend, come out and support Team Feger. Both tracks provide exciting , side by side racing, and the after-party at FALS is always a good time.
(Rumor has it, a certain FALS corner worker will be bringing the Jello shots!)

Feger recaptures the UMP points lead.
In a tight, three way battle for the UMP points championship, Jason has retaken the lead by a mere 14 points over Dennis Erb. Randy Korte is also adding points fast...looks like this is shaping up to be quite a contest.
Jason is also running third in Monster Midwest points going into this weekend, 14 points out. Hopefully, last weekends luck and momentum continues.

Swung by the shop today to check the happenins' and it was sad to see "Nightrain" being cleaned up to be dismantled and retired. For those of you that don't know, the cars have names. Nightrain and Split Lip. Seems Nightrain gave one too many piggy-back rides at Clarksville. Anyway, Jason was at Pierce's finishing up a new chassis, and the guys will start assembly of the new car ASAP.
I asked Austin what the new car will be named.

"Clawhammer."

Clawhammer? Has a nice ring to it, but why Clawhammer?

"Cuz' you can get a lot of *(things)* done with a clawhammer..."

Feger wins at Shepps!

Rounding out a great weekend, a last minute decision to go to Shepps paid off for Team Feger. In a race that Tracy called "Jason's toughest win of the year," Feger rallied from a 15th starting spot to win the feature at Shepps!

Not too many things will keep me from being at a dirt track on a Saturday night, however, Hobo's birthday bash kept us close to home. With that being said, the phone call I was waiting for came at about 11p.m.

Feger wins the $2500 to win MARS/UMP race at Lake of the Ozarks Speedway!!
Another evening of passing points racing had Jason start 5th in his heat, which he won, putting him on the pole of the feature.
At the drop of the green, Feger set out to do a repeat of the previous nights performance...win big. When the checkers waved, Jason had almost a straightaway lead on the rest of the field. Maybe this passing points racing isn't so bad after all!
This was Team Feger's first visit to the 3/8th's mile facility promoted by the Gundaker family. Jason commented that like Tri City, the track prep was excellent with plenty of multi groove racing. The place is really nice and he's looking forward to returning there when his schedule permits.

Great job Team Feger on a weekend filled with great racing and trophy girls!!

Quote of the night again goes to Jason. When answering the phone to get the scoop on the evenings racing, the first thing I heard was "WE LIKE LAKE OF THE OZARKS!!"

Feger leads all 40 laps of the MARS/UMP race at Tri City to capture his first series win, and the $3000 top prize!

Not being a big fan of passing points, the team was a little discouraged with a last place starting spot in the heat. But, Jason went to work and charged from the tail to finish a close second, just inches from taking the heat win. His performance in the heat race landed him pole position in the feature.

When the green waved, Jason proceeded to put on a clinic, amassing a 5 second lead over the second place car. Lap traffic was never much of a problem, and while he spent most of the race in his familiar top groove, the car was fast wherever Jason needed it to go.
After the races, Jason commented that "I don't like passing points racing, but maybe they aren't so bad when you get a track like that to race on. The Gundakers did a great job with the racing surface and the heats were long enough to make things happen."

The team has decided to continue on south to Lake of the Ozarks Speedway, in Eldon Missouri, for the second night of MARS/UMP competition.

Comment of the night goes to Jason. After almost winning the heat, he says: "I wish I had my big motor in the car..."

How kool is that -- Brettman will be posting on the blog too! Seems like these days most people know who I am, but just in cast any of you don't know Brettman -- here's a few tidbits:

He's a Feger Fan -- guess ya knew that, otherwise he wouldn't be posting on our blog :)
He's known Jason and Austin pretty much since they were wee, little tots, guess since they were babies.
Loves RACING and has a lovely bride who equally loves the races.
Brett's darn articulate and from my perspective, much witter than I will ever be.

Weekend Update August 8 and 9

Hey Folks, Brettman here "takin' care of shop" for the always busy Tracy.

On Friday, The Feger Racing Team will be taking their high flying act south to Tri City Speedway in Pontoon Beach IL, for the $3000.00 to win Mars/UMP show. As of late, Tri City has been pretty good to the Feger Team, hopefully Friday night will bring more positive results.

Saturday is still undecided, it will either be Kamp or Lake of The Ozarks Speedway, but it will be posted here as soon as a decision is made.

World 100 tickets are selling fast, but it was decided today that section "NG" at Eldora has been unofficially renamed "The Highside Headquarters." It will be THE place to be for the World 100, so you'd better get your tickets ordered soon, as only a handful are left.

Cedar Lake was an awesome week-end. Team Feger had a strong showing, one of the best from Illinois the entire week-end.

Thursday -- Jason won his heat. In the feature was running a strong third when a yellow came out on lap 10. During the yellow Babb let Jason know his right rear was going flat. The guys fixed the flat, came back out to restart 24th. Jason rallied back to 9th.

Friday -- USA Nationals Feger won the R2C Performance for his fast time!!! He was the only car with 13 second laps. Heat race finished third. Feature started 18th, moved to 13th. Lap 10 another darn flat. Came back out to 24th. Moved up to 8th and was looking strong. The track went away around lap 43, Cedar Lake had put new clay on the track. From what I'm told that was a rare occurance.

Thanks much to the Fans Fund and everyone that voted for Team Feger. We had fun at the luncheon and drawing for give-aways.

People every where were so gracious, we've never had so many people thank us for coming to their track -- how awesome is that.

Monster Midwest -- Charleston, Farmer City, Kamp & Danvile

Last Thursday, the Monster Midwest Series resumed in Charleston. Feger set a new track record, won his heat and won the feature!!
Next night FC -- Jason qualified 4th overall, won his heat and started great in the feature. While battling for third -- pop, pop, the car stopped. OH Crap!! I thought it was the motor, race car depression started to sink in. Luckily the motor was fine, the battery had a short. So that sucked. Darren Friedman and Erb put on a heck of a show in the feature.
Saturday -- Kamp, it was fantastic to be back at Kamp. Fast time, won the heat and dominated the feature. YEAH!!! Erb second, about 1/3 or more of a lap back with Heckenast Jr. right on his tail.
Sunday -- Danville -- fourth fast time, won the heat. Started front row outside of Dennis Erb. First lap, Erb took off, great start. Jason was right there. Restart, same thing. Eventually race got going -- Erb leading, about ten laps in Feger took the lead. Started pulling away and weaving in and out of lapped traffic. Two laps to go -- lapped cars holding Jason up. Erb on the bottom, Jason in the middle, Weaver (lapped) on the outside. Jason gets crowded, Erb gets the lead -- DARN IT, but at least it was a great race. Congrats to Dennis on the win. Unzicker and Heckenast had a good battle for third and fourth, but were not in contention for the lead.

NEXT UP -- CEDAR LAKE -- WDRL Show (I know there are those of you who like starting points, but I really, really, dislike them. Give me qualifing any day!) and USA Nationals up in Wisconsin.

Jason Feger took a break out of a busy schedule to contact me this evening. Jason is running this years SummerNationals and is back at his shop working on both cars to prepare them for the continued grind on the tour.

I was great catching up with Jason regarding how things have been going on the tour so far, his expectations for the rest of the SummerNationals, his relationship with Bob Pierce, and his excitment for visiting Cedar Lake Speedway for the USA Nationals.I confirmed with him that he is one of the leading vote getters and while it is a few days away, it appears that he will finish in the Top 10 for FANS Fund voting.

He is most definately aware of the FANS Fund and cannot believe so many Fans would vote for him in this area since he primarily runs in IL, IN, OH, KY, and MO. Like all the others, he thanked the Fans for voting for him and cannot wait to confirm being in the Top 10 and coming to Cedar Lake Speedway.

I told him that he had better bring plenty of t-shirts and merchandise as his stuff is just incredible. Shannon Babb got hot a bit too late to join the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals title chase, but he's grabbing all the purse money he can before the month-long series wraps up.

The 35-year-old driver from Moweaqua, Ill., nabbed his fourth victory in seven races Friday at Waynesfield Motorsports Park, collecting $7,500 in the 22nd and second-to-last event on the series. The sixth-starting Babb wrestled the lead from outside front row starter Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., on the 21st lap, then held off a last-ditch, low-groove charge by third-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., for the 40-lap victory.

"When I saw him down there," Babb said of Feger's final charge, "I just figured I better get going a little harder and pick up the pace a little bit, so I did."

Feger flashed across the finish line just behind Babb in second while eighth-starting Duane Chamberlain of Richmond, Ind., rejoining the Summernationals for the first time since July 1, was third for his best series performance. Shirley was fourth and 1997-'98 Summernationals champion Rick Aukland of Zanesville, Ohio, rounded out the top five in his only series appearance of '09.

The series title contenders didn't finish up front, but leader Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., rallied from his provisional starting spot to unofficially increase his leading margin to 20 points over two-time and reigning champ Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill. Korte advanced 10 positions to finish ninth while the 13th-starting Erb finished where he started. Erb entered the race 14 points behind Korte. Just one series race remains Saturday at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio.

At the outset of the feature, polesitter Scott James of Lawrenceburg, Ind. — back on the series where flat tires, spins and flips proved his undoing — pulled away from Shirley early in the race before his Summernational jinx appeared again.

The lapped car of Rick DeLong got into the rear of James entering turn one on the 13th lap, sending his No. 83 spinning. Officials sent No. 3 DeLong and James to the tail, but James elected to head to the pits. Before he left the track, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, James retaliated against the No. 3 of the second-running Shirley on the backstretch, crinkling the quarterpanel of the wrong No. 3.

Shirley inherited the lead for the restart with Babb, Chamberlain, Doug Drown and Feger in pursuit, and once Feger disposed of Drown, the top four duked it out through the race's middle stages. Babb beat Shirley into turn three just past the halfway point, and he stretched his lead to a half-straightaway by lap 25. But with Feger sliding under Chamberlain to take second on that lap, he slowly reeled Babb in the rest of the way.

With Babb sticking with the high groove, Feger worked the low side in turns three and four, pulling alongside the leader a few times in the closing laps. But Babb's momentum off turn four on the final lap carried him to the checkers just ahead of Feger, who misunderstood the flagger's signals and at first mistook the white flag for the checkers.

It was good side-by-side the last couple of laps," said Feger, who fought a tight-handling car. "It just ended up being a good finish."

Race notes ... Waynesfield hosted its first series race and drew 29 cars, the second-lowest total on the series. ... A quick program saw the feature end at dusk. Moyer Outduels Feger for Paducah $10k

PADUCAH, Ky. (June 26) On a track that's not his favorite where he says he never feels particularly comfortable, Billy Moyer was trying to feel things out at Paducah International Raceway during the 11th leg of the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals.

The outside front-row starter was cruising along in the lead when third-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., cut down Moyer's near-straightaway lead and took command on the 19th lap of the 40-lap feature. That was the 51-year-old Moyer's call to get up on the wheel and show everything his No. 21 had.

"When he passed me, I had something left," the Batesville, Ark., driver said. "We usually try to have something left when we have to — that's what a good football player or basketball player does. He's always got some reserve in him when you've gotta do it."

Summoning his reserves, Moyer battled the next nine laps with Feger, going back ahead amid lapped traffic on lap 28 and racing to his 2009-leading fourth Summernationals victory and second in a row. It was also his second straight victory at Paducah, following a May 29 Northern Allstars Late Model Series victory at the 3/8-mile western Kentucky oval.

"I didn't really know how much room I ever had. I was just riding along there and the car felt pretty good, but I was being pretty cautious. When he went sneaking by there, I knew I had to get going then," said Moyer, the six-time series champion who leads the tour with 68 career victories. He has four wins in six 2009 starts. "We were pretty close, really. He did a good job. It was fun. We had a good race. .. We just ran each other clean and we didn't tear crap up and load it up and go tomorrow without having stuff bent up.

"When there's a high side like that, he runs good. You can't count him out when he's got a little berm and that wall to hold him in there. He stands on it."

Feger, gunning for his second victory in the last three nights, knew he'd have his hands full with Moyer after making the pass and facing a pair of lapped cars.

"Shannon (Babb) and Rodney (Melvin) were racing each other real hard, and I just never could get a good hole, and it seemed like a hole opened right up for him at the right time at the right place," the 31-year-old Feger said. "There's no doubt Billy's better than I am when he it comes to getting down on the racetrack and racing around with lapped traffic. It just kind of went his way.

"He's real good at changing his lines and going and finding something different ... I think when I passed him he probably went and started doing something a little different and got better again. He's just real patient and he's one of the best there is. It's hard to complain when you run second to a guy like that, let alone pass him and lead for a little bit."

Feger held on to finish second despite a deflating right-rear tire that went nearly flat by the time he got back to his pits. Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., rallied from his 11th starting spot to take third from eighth-starting Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., on the race's lone restart at lap 33, and Korte's finish unofficially moved him past Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., in the Summernationals points chase.

Erb finished 12th. Polesitter Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., like Moyer driving a Victory Circle Chassis, ended up fifth. Brad Neat of Dunnville, Ky., ran in the top five most of the way but brought out the lap-33 yellow when his damaged left-front suspension slowed his No. 41.

Feger Wins Summernational at Peoria Speedway

A little more than a decade ago, Jason Feger was just getting his start in racing.One of the first tracks the Bloomington native sampled with his Sportsman car was the Peoria Speedway.“We ran here every Saturday night for several years and won a lot of Sportsman features here,” Feger said. “This is one of my home tracks.”

On Tuesday night, Feger picked up another feature win, albeit in a slightly more important race.Feger overtook polesitter Kevin Weaver near the midway point and won the $6,000 UMP Summer Nationals stop at the speedway.Feger, now known as the Highside Hustler, lived up to his nickname.

After Weaver and Rodney Melvin won the first two heats by running on the bottom, Feger showed just how quick the top could be in winning the third heat.He did the same thing in the feature, patiently waiting for his tires to come in on the high side before running Weaver down and then running away.“I think I was harder on tires than just about anybody else tonight,” Feger said. “The top side was real tricky in turns 3 and 4.“You just kind of had to tip-toe your way through there and try to keep your momentum.”

Feger was followed across the line by defending champion Jeep VanWormer, who also used the high side to get around Weaver, who finished third. There was also excitement early in the evening for the Late Models as Shannon Babb set a new track record of :12.119 seconds, breaking the old record of 12.409 set last year by Wes Steidinger.

Feger's Tri-City victory the perfect gift for Mom

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (June 24) — During hot laps on ninth leg of the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals at Tri-City Speedway, Jason Feger taped a huge birthday card over his car's No. 25: "Happy 50th Birthday Mom!"

But what's a card without a birthday present? Feger provided a special gift, too, dramatically leading all 40 laps at the 3/8-mile oval and welcoming Tracy Feger to victory lane to celebrate his first-ever victory on the month-long tour.

Before anyone was blowing out any candles on a birthday cake, though, the 31-year-old Feger had plenty of work to do. Starting on the pole one night after blowing an engine at Charleston (Ill.) Speedway, Feger turned to his last functioning powerplant and mashed the gas to grab the lead while running the thin cushion ringing the track.

The driver known as the Highside Hustler fought off challenges from fellow front-row starter Scott James of Lawrenceburg, Ind., (who spun in turn four on the 13th lap) and last year's Tri-City Summernationals winner Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., through the first 25 laps of the race.

But Feger's stiffest challenges came Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., who ran an admittedly unorthodox line — "making the turns straightaways and making the straightaways turns," he said — by diving into turns one and three low on the wide racetrack while drifting up to gain ground, racing his way from his ninth starting spot up to second following a restart with 15 laps remaining.

A final caution for debris with less than 10 laps remaining set up a showdown with Feger, whose high side wasn't quite as reliable as before, and Korte, who aimed to cut across the corners and take the lead. Several times in the closing laps Korte nosed ahead in turns two and four, but he never had quite enough to get in front for good.

"The top was definitely going away there toward the end, and I knew it," Feger said. "I just knew, after running that many laps at that pace on the top side, I'd never be able to get it slowed down enough to get to the bottom, so I figured 'I'm going just have to stay up there and make it work until there's nothing left — or until I get passed.' Thankfully it was 40 laps, because I don't know if I'd been able to hold him off much longer."

"Randy's, he's a really good racer. ... We might rub a little here and there, but we're pretty good friends off the track, and you know you're going to get a hard race with him. He's not going to give you anything. He did a really good job. He could've tried to throw a dirty slide job or squeeze me into the wall, and he didn't do any of that. He ran a really good race."

Korte pushed Feger to the limit before settling for a second-place finish that unofficially moved him into a tie for the series points lead.

"All I could do was hope that Jason would screw up just once. He didn't screw up enough," Korte said. "When the top side is like that, Jason is probably the best in the business. I've never seen anybody get around the high side like he does.

"As long as we keep having finishes like this, I'm happy."

Moyer, the fast qualifier among 34 entrants, tried high and low to keep up with Feger but settled for third while two-time and reigning series champion lost ground early from his seventh starting spot but rallied back to finish fourth. Tenth-starting Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, who earned $10,000 at Tri-City's Lucas Oil Series-sanctioned FedEx 50 on Memorial Day weekend, started 10th and raced up to fourth before losing that spot to Erb in the final laps. Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., who entered the race leading the series points, started sixth but faded to finish 10th and unofficially dropped into a tight for the lead with Korte with Erb just three points back.

The feature was slowed by five cautions, none for serious incidents. Shannon Babb pulled in to change a shredded tire on the third lap (then later retired his smoking No. 18 to the infield) and Mark Voigt had a lap-nine flat. The lap-13 spin of James brought out the third caution, and the two cautions in the second half of the race were for a slowing Steve Casebolt and debris in turn one.

Feger, who earned $7,500 for an early-season victory at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway and then $7,650 for a World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis., was glad to finally win on a tour he's run regularly in recent years.

"I tell you what, we started off the year really hot, and we've been in a big slump here lately. We just haven't been able to get things going our way. We've had some motor problems and just haven't been able to catch a break," Feger said, crediting Birkhofer with helping to point him in the right direction with some changes on his Pierce Race Car. "My crew man, they've been working their tails off this whole Summernationals. This is a really tough deal and we've been at each other a little bit here and there because we've been struggling and it's been hot. ... this will definitely help us out and help us get down the road."

Summernationals are in full swing!!

The infamous Hell Tour is in full swing across the Midwest. Personally, I love it!!! The only part I hate is missing a few races due to my day job :) Ok, once in a while I do hate the races if the tracks become one lane, rubber upped, bottom dweller tracks with NO passing.

But that hasn't really happened yet -- so, I better knock on some wood or something really fast.

This isn't in chronological order, but here's what's been going on.

Last night -- Tri-State Speedway -- Great Racing!!!! Jason was fifth, started seventh. He was racing with Korte and Melvin for the second when something broke with the shock -- they told me but I already forgot what it was. Jeep won.

Great Track -- well worth the trip, going again last year.

Kamp -- Team Feger had to be the favorite there, but what a night!!!! Could have written a book about everything that went on. Long story short -- before I got there around 5:00, there was a massive down pour. The track crew tried working the track in but it didn't work. A mod went out to pack and than so did Jason. Soon all kinds of cars were packing. What I didn't know was all hell was breaking loose in the pits. Some drivers didn't want to run. That's their choice. But I've seen a few of those same drivers run on BAHA tracks for $2k.

To the main event. Jason started like eleventh, had moved up to seventh within 10 laps. So, we thought -- good and than all of a sudden he almost stopped on the front shoot. From than on, he didn't run as well and eventually pulled in.

The tranny was slipping, so he was trying to drive one handed and hold it in gear -- that doesn't work too well. Plus, on top of that he was concerned with the motor, a valve spring broke. Luckily, Matt Rhyne was on hand to take a look.

More bad news. Since you're reading this on the Feger blog, you gotta understand that I have a biased opinion about things that negatively impact the guys ;)--- UMP decided to modify the rules which really STINKS cause the drivers that didn't run get to give up a 10 point night. If you ran at Kamp, you also give up your one night of points. Your worse night, but chances are you are going to have to give up a 40 or 50 point night, not a 10 point night.

Love the new rule or hate the new rule -- don't really know yet -- we'll see at the end of series. If the guys miss a full night, guess I'll LOVE it. If they lose the SN points to one of the drivers who didn't run at Boswell by say 40 points, and Jason had to give up a 45 point night, I will really HATE it.

But hey, the guys did what was right, they argued to the death that they should race. They stood by their home track and the people who have been loyal to them. Grandpa would have been very proud of them.

So who won? Eric Smith!

What else --- Clarksville UGH!!!! I stayed home and caught info on www.4m.net and www.dirtondirt.com. Jason was starting outside front row of his heat, so I was extremely happy. Lap one, Jason was on the outside, moving to pass Weaver, Weaver drifted up, making contact with Jason's car. Jason went sideways, a car went over the nose of Jason's car and landed on top of Ryan Unzickers car. Some where in the midst of all the chaos, Wendall Wallace (a great driver) hurt has hand. Don't know if he broke his hand, wrist or exactly what. Good news -- Ryan and Jason were ok. Bad news it was pretty much carnage on cars. All kinds of things were messed up on poor Night Train's chassis. So Jason and Ryan both took provisionals to get in.

Kankakee -- Exciting night of racing. I'll have to try to remember everything. I'm SO VERY GLAD the night went well for K3. Races were very good. Love that track.

Where does that leave us -- tied for fourth or fifth in points with seven nights in and twenty to go.

Feger Wins Heat at the Dream, Eldora Speedway

Geeeez, I haven't posted in such a long time. So very sorry. We've been SLAMMED.
So what's been going on -- all kinds of stuff -- so where to start --
THE DREAM AT ELDORA SPEEDWAY.

Jason qualified pretty darn good 21st out of 116 cars. Putting him on the pole of a loaded third heat. Outside Jason was his good friend Jeep Van Wormer. Three bad starts forced a single file restart. On that restart -- Jason was on a string around the top of the track. Jason thought Jeep was right on his tail due to the fact he usually would have been. Unfortunately, Jason couldn't see Austin signaling him due to the glare of the sun off the rigs in the infield.

In the feature Jason started fourth -- AWESOME!!!! There really was a chance for him to have a top 5 or 10, he was running a very solid 5th around lap 30 he started to fade. Come to find out, the right rear was losing pressure. That meant the stagger would be all messed up on the car. DARN IT!! But as they say, that's racing.

WHAT A NIGHT: It appeared that UMP DIRTcar star Jason Feger’s planned weekend of WoO LMS action might be done when he experienced terminal engine woes as he took the checkered flag in a heat-race transfer spot on Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway.“This is the first time we ran this car and motor this year and the motor broke,” said a dejected Feger, who headed home to Bloomington, Ill., after taking the A-Main green flag in Jason Frankel’s machine for start money. “We have the car we’ve run all year back in the shop, but it has a thousand laps on it so I don’t know if it can do two more (WoO LMS) shows.”

Alas, Feger, 30, decided to press on with his battle-tested equipment. He was in the parking lot of 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, when Saturday night’s program there was called off due to rain, and he made the tow to Charter on Sunday.Feger certainly made the correct choice. Using the tired-but-still-strong Pro Power engine that he bought several years ago for $10,000 from fellow racer Ryan Dauber, Feger set fast time and came off the outside pole to lead the 40-lap A-Main from flag-to-flag for his first career WoO LMS triumph.

While the win was undoubtedly the biggest of his dirt Late Model career, Feger was also proud of the fact that he gave chassis builder Bob Pierce his first victory in WoO LMS competition.“Bob Pierce has really helped me a bunch and now I think we’ve finally turned the corner with these cars,” said Feger. “It feels great to get Bob a World of Outlaws win, but I would’ve been just as excited if Stevie Sheppard (Jr.) was the first one to win (a WoO LMS event) with one of these cars. Stevie is one of my teammates, one of my sponsors and a real good friend, and he had a real good run Friday (at U.S. 36) with his (Pierce) car. I was jumping up-and-down on the sidelines rooting for him (until engines problems knocked Sheppard from contention).

”Feger hopes that his huge win will turn some heads and help fuel his desire to become a fulltime dirt Late Model driver in the future. His goal is to someday follow the WoO LMS.“I think a lot of the World of Outlaws guys have respect for me,” said Feger. “I’m friends with most of them. We get along good, and they know I can race with them because we’ve done it before.“I’d love to run with the World of Outlaws someday, but right now our program isn’t at that level. I have real good equipment, but I don’t have enough of it to get out and do it fulltime far from home.“Maybe some people who were here tonight that hadn’t seen me race might want to do something,” he continued. “But if nothing else comes from this win, it’s more money to keep funding this deal myself.”

DOWN IN THE DUMPS: UMP DIRTcar stalwart Steve Sheppard Jr. and his 16-year-old son Brandon had a busy weekend of WoO LMS racing planned, but it ended abruptly when a promising night at U.S. 36 Raceway went horribly wrong.The elder Sheppard saw what was shaping up to be the best WoO LMS performance of his career go south on lap 39. After leading laps 1-20 of the 50-lap A-Main and then moving back in to challenge eventual winner Steve Francis for the lead following a lap-33 caution flag, the New Berlin, Ill., driver pulled off with a burnt piston during a caution period.

With Brandon Sheppard already having dropped out of the B-Main due to engine trouble, Steve Sheppard was disconsolate in the pit area as his team loaded up. He said that Friday’s troubles left him with five broken motors, so he had no choice but to abandon his hopes of following the three-race swing.Sheppard could only wonder what might have been after flirting with WoO LMS glory.“I don’t know if I would’ve been able to get back by Francis, but I was gonna give ‘em all I had, I guarantee you that,” said Sheppard. “I think I had a shot, but we’ll never know now.”

DirectorJason Feger lived up to his nickname on Sunday night at Charter Raceway Park.Tossing his car around the extreme top of the one-third-mile oval, the ‘Highside Hustler’ led the 40-lap Tri-State Late Model Challenge A-Main from flag-to-flag to record his first career victory on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.Feger, 30, of Bloomington, Ill., outgunned polesitter Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio, for the lead at the initial green flag and never looked back.

The personable UMP DIRTcar Racing star turned back some challenges from Miller and survived a lap-34 caution flag to pocket a career-best race payoff of $7,650.“I knew the outside would be good, but I didn’t know how good and for how long,” said Feger, who started second in his family-owned Bob Pierce Chassis car. “I knew I had to try running it, though, so I just told the guys, ‘We’re gonna hang on as long as we can hang on up there.’ “Luckily it stayed good enough up top for the whole race and the bottom wasn’t quite quick enough. It all worked out in our favor.”

Miller settled for a career-high WoO LMS finish of second in Larry Moring’s MasterSbilt machine. He couldn’t stay with Feger after the race’s lone restart on lap 34, finishing 1.318 seconds behind.Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., battled forward from the fifth starting spot to finish third in his Bloomquist Team Zero Chassis, falling short of a victory in front of his homestate fans.

Terry Casey of New London, Wis., placed fourth in his Rayburn mount and Rick Eckert of York, Pa., completed the top five in Raye Vest’s Bloomquist Team Zero Chassis.Feger, whose previous best WoO LMS finish was a fourth on Sept. 13, 2008, at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., was ecstatic when he reached Victory Lane on the speedway’s homestretch.

He high-fived and hugged his crew, which is led by Feger’s brother Austin (the Integra Shocks ‘Wrench of the Race’ Award winner), and acknowledged a loud cheer from the crowd.
“We’ve been thinking about winning one of these World of Outlaws races for a long time,” said Feger, who entered Sunday’s UMP DIRTcar co-sanctioned event ranked second in the organization’s national points standings.

“We love racing with the World of Outlaws and we’ve come close a few times, but I didn’t know if (a victory) was gonna happen – especially at a track we’ve never seen.“But maybe racing at this place for the first time was to our advantage. We didn’t know anything about it, so in this situation all you gotta do is get out there and race.

That’s what we did – and after we qualified good (recording fast time), that kinda set the tone for the whole night.”Feger’s triumph – a checkered flag he called “the biggest win of my career” – came after he experienced a dismal outing in Friday night’s Tri-State Late Model Challenge opener at U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo.

He suffered a broken motor at the end of his heat race, forcing him to take the green flag in another car and then drive back to his shop in central Illinois to retrieve his backup car for the remainder of the weekend’s action.

Miller, who made his first WoO LMS start of the 2009 season, never found the opportunity to overtake Feger that he hoped would materialize.“After I couldn’t slide up and get ahead of (Feger) at the start, I tried to bide my time behind him,” said Miller. “I know that he’s pretty aggressive running the top – and if you attack that cushion, you can get in trouble.

I wanted to be in position to take advantage of any bobble he might make, but I didn’t stay close enough to him. When we got to (lapped) traffic it seemed like he’d clear a car and then I’d get hung up, and that just cost me too much ground.”Brady Smith, meanwhile, dearly wanted to win for the dozens of family members and friends he had watching his only WoO LMS appearance of the season in Wisconsin, but the 31-year-old struggled to advance with the outside line the preferred way around the track. He gained control of third place on lap 14, but he found himself nearly a straightaway behind Miller and didn’t pull within striking distance of the second-place runner until just before Grand Forks, N.D.’s Dustin Hapka spun in turn two to bring out the lap-34 caution flag.

“We had a really good car,” said Smith, who registered his second consecutive top-five finish on the WoO LMS. “But it was tough to pass because the top was dominant. We made some moves to go forward, but we couldn’t get up there to challenge (Feger) and that was disappointing.”Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., finished sixth after running as high as third. Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., moved up three spots to place seventh, followed by 13th-starter Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga.,WoO LMS points leader Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., and Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., who recorded his first top-10 finish of the season.Defending tour champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., who switched to his backup car after his primary mount developed a minor engine problem during time trials, finished 11th.

A 32-car field was signed in for the program, which was run under clear and cool conditions. It was the first WoO LMS event at Charter since May 12, 2007.Feger registered his first career WoO LMS fast-time award, topping the Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 14.535 seconds. He pocketed a $50 bonus for his effort.Heat winners were Miller, Brady Smith, Eckert and Fuller. The B-Main was captured by Nick Anvelink of Navarino, Wis.

The WoO LMS now heads east for a three-race swing that visits Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del., on Thurs., May 28; Hagerstown (Md.) Tough week, Paducah and Kamp

Last week we were all looking forward to getting down to an awesome track -- Paducah Kentucky! The rain won out on Thursday, but Friday the Lucas Oil boys were in town. The Feger team headed to Paducah, but ended up fighting a broken axle on the trailer. Got the trailer fixed and headed to Paducah.

Feger won his heat and finished eigth in the feature.

The following night, team Feger won at Boswell, Indiana as the Lucas Oil race in LaSalle, Illinois was rained out.

So, during the week, Jason tracked down a place in Indiana to build trailer axles, he made the eleven plus hour round trip while Austin picked up the motor from Mulvain for Split Lip.

The guys worked late into the night to get everything done and headed for Osborn, Missouri for the first night of the WOO Tri-State Challenge.

Hot laps went good, running fifth in the heat and WHAM, the motor blew on the last lap. Less than 30 laps on it, darn it!

For the feature Jason borrowed a car (sorry, I don't know who) to get his start money. The highlight of the night was how well Shep ran, he lead the feature for nearly 20 laps before the Kentucky Colonel got him in lapped traffic, unfortunately, Shep also blew during the feature. A WOO win escaped the Pierce team.

The guys made the nearly six hour trip home to pick up Night Train with the little motor. Next part of the week-end WOO series was Burlington, Iowa. The guys got to the track and waited before buying pit passes. Grandma, Holly and I were half way to the track when Jason called and said it was a rain out. DARN it!

Jason considered making the nearly 4 hour trek to Fairbury, but opted against it.

Everyone came home. Yesterday morning, the guys headed North for the final leg of the WOO Challenge. Charter Raceway in Beaver Dam Wisconsin.

Purkey Outduals Feger, grabs WDRL victory

East Moline, Ill. (May 11, 2009) -- The WORLD Dirt Racing League was up for round 2 of its 2009 season here Sunday at Quad City Raceway, and racing fans who made the journey to the tight, high banks of QCR were treated to some of the best door-to-door action seen so far this season.

Thirty-one WDRL cars and drivers were on hand to take their shot at the $5,000 top prize as Chad Simpson in his no. 25 car sought to extend his early season point lead.

Four ultra-competitive heat races started the evening with the top finishers coming from the rear of the field in each event.

The eight-car pole dash was Quad City Raceway's version of Talladega with the top positions two by two from start to finish.

The 40-lap main event went flag to flag with intense racing throughout the entire field. Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kan., darted into the early lead with WDRL Rookie of the Year contender Chad Mahder in tow.

Simpson raced hard with Mahder, eventually getting by him. But then came the thriller of the night in the form of the "Highside Hustler," Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill.

Overtaking both Mahder and Simpson, Feger rode the rail on the top side of the speedway with his site set on the front-running Purkey. Feger had Purkey passed on three different occasions but Purkey was able to battle back into the lead each time.

Intense lapping traffic, three wide most of the time, played a huge roll in the outcome of the race as each driver darted high and low to pass lapped cars everywhere on the race track.

Just before the halfway point, Feger showed his nose to Purkey down the back straightaway, with Simpson running a strong third at the time. All three drivers were on the same straightaway for almost the entire second half of the race. But each time Feger would complete a pass, Purkey was right there to take it back.

Feger took one last look to the inside of Purkey on the last lap, made a move to the bottom that did not work and had to settle for second place as Purkey took the checkered flag.

It was the first WORLD Dirt Racing League win for Purkey, who has committed to running the entire WDRL schedule

"I was racing (Feger) hard, I knew he was there and we got together there on the front stretch, but that's quarter-mile racing," Purkey said in a post-race interview referring to some contact on the tight race track. "I think he would have done the same thing. It's just good hard racing. I'm sure there's no hard feelings."

Simpson turned in another strong performance, finishing third in the final rundown and still on the same straightaway as the leaders. Dennis Erb was able to negotiate lapped traffic to post a strong fourth-place finish while rookie Chad Mahder was able to hold on to fifth.

Feger wins Kamp

Last Friday and Saturday was the time to hit both of our home tracks. Darn rain won out at FC. But, Saturday we made it over to Kamp. Guess what -- we didn't take the tshirt trailer, so I got to watch the races. YEAH!!!

Tammie and Phil were already there when we got to the track. Phil had polish sausage, so Gma couldn't resist.

Twenty-six late models were on hand.

Timing, Jason qualified 5th. In his heat, things looked bad, he faded and finished fourth.

I'm sitting watching races and realized my Mom, Gma hadn't came back from the bathroom. Darn woman, Holly and I loose her all the time! I go look for her and have an Ah-ha moment.
Realized she was watching Kasey Kahne, her other favorite driver race in the Bossingham motor home :)

Late model feature time. Jason started pretty far back, like eighth, but at least that was better than starting 16th! I was pretty nervous, that's a lot of cars to pass in a short feature. Jason darted in and out of traffic extremely quickly and took the lead on lap five, he was on fire. As Brettman would say, he drove it like he stole it.

Shepps Speedway in Alexander, IL

Sampson & I headed off to Sheps Speedway last Sunday for the first time. Steve, his Dad, Miss and everyone did a great job on the track. It's pretty small and tight, but it was very racey. From a fans point of view -- you are right there on the track. Be sure to go check it out.

The races -- Jason finished fifth that night. Weaver won, Jeep, than Shep or someone else was fourth. I don't remember. Jeep and Weaver had a tought fight going for first.

Jason started a bit back and moved up pretty well.

Feger Takes Nourie Memorial at Fairbury American Legion Speedway

Jason Feger won his heat and drew a fourth place starting spot for the Nourie Memorial Northern All Stars race at Fairbury American Legion Speedway on May 2, 2009. Thirty-six late models were on hand for the event.

After a week of rain, the speedway's track crew worked hard but couldn't get all of the ruts removed. No track would have held up with all the moisture from the previous week.

Feger started second row outside, infront of him on the pole of row one was Dennis Erb Jr. with Kevin Cole on the outside. Inside of the second row Gwas another Pierce car, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin.

The late models flew across the rough track, at several points you could see all four tires off the track. On lap 18 Jason put a move on Erb in number three turn and slid underneath of him taking the lead. Erb would get close several times, but Feger found the smoother way around the track taking the forty lap feature. Grandpa would have been smiling ear to ear, I sure was.

It was Jason's first win at the historic speedway. Team Feger's crew was also rewarded for their hard work, with a big check and trophy to the crew chief Austin Feger. Thanks to Aftershock for the crew honors.

Brett, Kim and Kristi were besides themselves to have Jason pick up the win at their home track of Fairbury. They were most definately smiling ear to ear, their night was made and they celebrated till dawn.

Plus, a GIGANTIC KUDOS to the track and everyone involved in the Memorial event, they did an awesome job honoring their friend.

New Track Record set at Lincoln Speedway by Feger

Jason Feger broke his old track record at Lincoln Speedway the second night out of the Monster Midwest Series. Feger won his heat and would start sixth in the feature.

Steve Sheppard of New Berlin jumped to the early lead. Feger battled his way to the front and took the lead with 22 laps to go. Three laps to go, Feger hit very congested lapped traffic, Shep was able to get by on the top.

CONGRATS to Steve Sheppard, Jr on the well-deserved win!!!

Next up was to be Paducah, unfortunately they are rained out. So the guys headed to Farley, Iowa.

Feger Wins Monster Midwest at Kamp!

Jason Feger put on a show at one of our favorite tracks, Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, Indiana.

The Kamp team fought the wind and broken pump to get the show in.

Feger had a right rear flat in the heat, causing him to exit the track by lap two. YIKES!! That meant he was going to start last in the B-Main.

Feger won the B-Main and started 16th in the 30 lap main event. Eric Smith took the early lead with Frank Heckenast, Jr battling him for second. Lap by lap, Jason picked off the field. With 6 or 7 laps left, Feger took the lead and didn't look back. How very exciting.

Jason was exhausted and glad the race was 30 laps.

Tri-City Frostbuster 50

YIKES!!! Last Friday, April 17 did not go well at Tri-City Speedway's "Frostbuster 50" in Granite City, Illinois near St. Louis. Weather was great, 45 or 48 late models at the track, stands were full. Miss Sheppard, Dixie (my dog) and I were in the Feger-Shep souvenir trailer most of the night. Miss and I were taking turns watching the heats. When Steve and Brandon raced, she watched the heats. When Jason was out, I watched. Jason finished fifth in his heat, which meant he'd have to go through the semi. Darn it :(

Dixie was not happy at all, but for a complete different reason. My poor dog wanted nothing to do with the dirt that was slingin' up and hitting her as we sat on the bottom row of the stands.

Jason won the semi by a pretty good margin. He looked very good, like he'd be able to move forward in the feature. YEAH!!!!

Feature time, my plan was to cover up Dixie with a blanket on the bottom of the stands so if the dirt hit, she wouldn't mind as much. Typically she will sit still through a very long race. A shout of thanks is needed to the guy in the stands who helped me cover Dixie up before the feature.

Feger started 16th, with Birky and Vaught on the pole. Behind the front row were Don Oneal, Scott James and several other very good drivers. Jason started picking off drivers in the rear one by one. He looked good, potentially a top five car.

Lap 12 -- Jason was up to eigth, battling Brad Neat for seventh. WHAM, Dixie gets hit by a big dirt clod, so we had to move, she wasn't about to stay put for the entire feature. We move to the aisle between the stands all the while watching the feature. KABOOM, within two laps Jason SLAMS into the front stretch wall, nose first exactly where we were sitting. Fence poles tumble down, the garbage can went flying and Dixie and I went running to see if Jason was ok. Poor Night Train didn't so look good. Jason was trying to back up, he had NO idea that the right rear axle was broken. I was just glad he was ok.

The guy who helped me cover up Dixie was saying that dog acts like she know him. So, I'm like, heck yes she does! That's her car and her boy! Dixie pulls me over to the fence, smelling in the air. I don't know if she could hear Jason talking to the officials or what.

So, back to the race. Tri-City threw the red flag. Poor Night Train and Jason were hooked up by the wrecker and dragged off to the pits looking very pathetic. The back hoe came out, officials had to replace three fence posts with new ones. Nearly 30 minutes everything was ready to go racing and Dixie and I went back to the souvenir trailer.

Birky won, so congrats to the Birkhoffer-Mars teams.

Budha, Dixie and I left the track around midnight to make the trek home. The guys came home a couple of hours later, maybe around 4:30 - 5:00 in the morning. Saturday was supposed to be Kamp. Unfortunately, all the guys were in the shop working on the car all day and most of the evening.

Sunday was supposed to be Quad Cities for the UMP/WDRL challenge, but the weather won that race.

Next on the schedule: "The Opening Extravaganza" at Kankakee on Friday, Kamp Motor Speedway on Saturday and Lincoln Speedway on Sunday. A triple header, all events part of the Monster Midwest Series.

Motor Problems

UGH!!! Darn it!!! The motor needs some work done to it. It only had like 7 nights on it!!

I'm not sure exactly what is wrong, I think it has something to do with the cam. Might sound crazy -- but typically I never really ask, sort of hoping for the no news is good news thing to happen. Plus, when it comes to motors if it is bad, it is quite depressing and everyone that comes and goes at this house gets in a major racing funk.

So, hopefully the guys will be able to get the motor back from Mike Mullvain on Thursday or early Friday morning to get it back in the car before Tri-City so we can have a full week-end of racing.

If not, I'm not 100% sure what will happen, perhaps they will borrow Bob's motor.

So, keep your fingers crossed :) that Mullvain was able to get the parts and get that motor together.

I'll try to update when I know more.

KAMP Northern All Stars

55 late models were on hand for opening night at Kamp Motorspeedway in Boswell, IN. Lots of fans were in the stands too, braving an extremely cold night. When we left the track, the tempature according to my car was 34 degrees.

Qualifing: FEGER FAST TIME in his group and overall.

Heat: Feger won his heat.

Feature: The drivers who won the heats drew numbers to determine feature starting positions. Jason was starting third behind Darrin Friedman and Dennis Erb on the outside.

Feger got off to a really horrible start, shuffled back to fifth.

Erb got out to an early lead and Loomis was right on his tail. Ted was able to get pass Erb on the low side while Jason battled his way back to third. After a yellow, Dennis nudged Ted to get him out of position and take back the lead.

Feger passed Loomis on the highside and was reeling in Dennis when another yellow came out. Jason put a very slick move on Dennis down low and took out the lead, only to relinquish it back for a yellow that came out for Unzicker.

Feger and Erb continued to battle. Jason nearly had Erb when another yellow came out. The two were pretty far out in front and DARN IT!!!!! Feger pulled into the infield. Grandma swears Jason would have had Dennis, but I'm not 100%. Erb was pretty darn fast, so we would have had second for sure.

Ted finished second, but was light on the scales. Sometimes, he just can't get a break. So that put Friedman in second who ran a very good race. Weaver also had a good race, coming from the rear of the field to the top ten, only to have to pull out after an altercation with another car. Richie looked strong early but faded. He had a fast run earlier in the night and won his heat.

So -- what happened. To quote the Brettman -- they had a twenty-five lap battery in a thirty lap race. The darn battery quit. The race sure seemed like 50 or 60 laps with the yellows, but what can you do.

Next week -- the car will be in full charge :)

Thanks to Kamps and track for a fun night of racing, sure they had to work hard to get it in after all the rain last week.

What would a victory in this weekend's second annual Illini 100 at Farmer City Raceway mean to rising central Illinois star Jason Feger? Well, the first thing that popped into the Bloomington, Ill., driver's mind when asked that question was purely financial. The blockbuster World of Outlaws Late Model Series event, after all, pays $20,000 to win from a total purse of $100,000.

“It means I'd be able to buy a new motor,” quipped Feger, who has carved out a growing regional reputation campaigning family-owned Dirt Late Model equipment without big-money backing.

Dig a little deeper with the personable Feger, however, and out bursts the true significance of a triumph in his home state's richest Dirt Late Model event, which kicks off with time trials and qualifying heats on Friday, April 3, and concludes with consolation races, a non-qualifiers' race and the Illini 100 on Saturday, April 4.

“It would be just crazy to win it,” Feger said. “There's gonna be so many great cars and drivers there, and I'm going to have a lot of family and friends there watching. Feger shirts should be everywhere, so winning the biggest race of my career in front of everybody I know would be an unbelievable feeling.”

An outgoing 30-year-old known for his cool race car graphics (his schemes feature tumbling dice), cutting-edge hipness (Feger and younger brother Austin wore colorful Mohawk hairdos to UMP DIRTcar Summernationals events last year) and hard-charging driving style (he's called the Highside Hustler), Feger would be the center of a huge postrace celebration if he could pull off a win.

“There probably wouldn't be enough beer in Farmer City for the party we'd have,” Feger said with a laugh. “I think we might just stay in the pits for a few days.”

Feger's familiarity with the quarter-mile Farmer City oval is certainly his ace in the hole, but it's not the only reason plenty of observers are looking at him as a serious contender for glory in the Illini 100. He enters the weekend riding plenty of momentum, thanks to the strong finish he had to his career year in 2008 and a career-high $7,500 victory last month in a UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned event at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Ky.

The 2008 season ended with Feger's ledger showing 13 feature wins at seven different tracks, including two victories at Farmer City. He finished third in the UMP weekly points, placed second in the Northern Allstars Late Model Series points race and registered a WoO career-high finish of fourth in September at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo. — a body of work that made him an easy choice for the 2008 UMP Most Improved Driver Award.

“Things started clicking real good last year,” said Feger, who launched his Dirt Late Model career in 2001 after spending four years in the Sportsman division. “I've changed chassis brands quite a few times in the past few years, but last year we really got settled into Pierce cars and found a nice baseline setup that's worked for us.”

Feger knows that he'll have to be on top of his game this weekend if he expects to turn back a cross-section of the country's dirt racers.

“I always feel like I have something to prove being a low-budget guy,” said Feger, who works at his family's Absolute Apparel business but hopes to someday go racing full-time and chase the WoO. “I know I can run with (the sport's national stars), but I have to have the same focus as those guys. These (WoO) guys run every lap like it's their last — they're always searching for new lines around the track and changing how they drive if their car starts to not feel right.

“And all these guys know how to be patient in a 100-lap race. That's one of the things I'm still learning.”

Last year Feger didn't even get a chance to strut his stuff in the inaugural Illini 100. He failed to qualify after a flat tire knocked him out of a transfer spot in his heat and he came up two positions short in a consolation race, though he did win the 25-lap non-qualifiers' race following last year's Illini 100.

“It was really depressing to miss last year's (Illini 100),” said Feger. “We were running right behind (2007 WoO champion Steve) Francis when we got the flat in the heat, and Francis went out and finished third in the feature. And our lap times in the non-qualifiers' race were about the same as (Billy) Moyer and (Shannon) Babb (the winner and runner-up, respectively, in the dramatic race).

“I know our car was fast enough last year, but whether I could've done it for 100 laps, I don't know. Hopefully this year we'll be there at the end.”

Illini 100

We were at Farmer City last Friday and Sat for the second Illini 100. Track was FAST during qualifing. Jason went out late, unfortunately Jesse sent him out while Ryan U. was still out on the track. Jason spun on what he thought was his first lap, but it wasn't really cause Ryan was still timing. So Jason only took one more lap. Confused, we sort of was too. Anyway, Jason qualified 20th out of 55 cars, not great, but not horrible.

Heat recap from Dirtondirt.com: Outside front-row starter Brian Brian Birkhofer fought off a late charger from polesitter Steve Francis to win the 10-lapper. Birkhofer was slowed by lapped traffic heading for the white flag when Francis grabbed the lead. But Birkhofer answered the move, going back ahead before the frontrunners entered turn two. Fourth-starting Jason Feger got the third and final transfer spot in the caution-free prelim. Finish: Brian Birkhofer, Steve Francis, Jason Feger, Brandon Sheppard, Russ King, Kevin Weaver, Ted Loomis, Adam Mefford, Cory Daugherty.

Main Event:
Feature Clanton won, only two yellows. Feger started 14th and moved up to 8th. Track was fast up high, but hard to pass on.

The Souvenir Trailer Arrives

Life has become even more chaotic. Shep got a souvenir trailer -- so it's at our house. Worked on a wrap nearly three weeks ago and Aaron's been busy, so it hasn't been output. If you see Aaron, give him some grief for me.

John at Showtime is also outputting some more graphics for Night Train, so eventually the poor car will have roof numbers.

Getting more cool merchandise for the trailer. Also completed new shirt designs, have those in stock now. Images are on the website. We also have beer steins, lighters, coffee cups and more stuff. Gotta work on getting some hats and skullie caps.

Hmmmmmm -- what else is coming?? New postcards, has a kool photo Greg took at Btown with Jason slinging dirt. He took the photo from the stands and it is tight. Also, getting some new tats for the kids. These will have a skull and Feger25.

Looks like I'll be the one in the souvenir trailer most the time -- so stop by and say hi.

As an fyi -- it will be closed for ALL FEATURE events -- cause I'm watching the races :)

Catching up on Result Posts

OK -- I've been slacking posting -- but that's cause I've been pretty darn busy working on tee designs. So, this is my attempt to catch up on posts.

What's Been Going On
The Icebreaker Brownstown
It was FREEEEZING, I swear it took two hours for me to get warm on the way home. But, back to racing. Man, is Brownstown a flat track compared to what I'm used too. A guy infront of me was telling me they added banking.

The people in the stands were really cool that I talked to. Typically, I love qualifing, but that track was SLOW and qualifing was PAINFUL. It was like you wanted to push the cars around the track. Since it was my first trip, I don't know if that's usually what goes on.

The racing -- in the feature for part of it the front runners tight, excellent racing with Clanton, Owens and Bloomer all duking it out for the lead during the first 15 - 20 laps.

Jason had qualified 5th in his group of 30 cars. Finished third in his heat, started 17th and finished 13th. He was right on the rear of Jeep and Bill. Most of the racing was down on the bottom.

During the night, got to warm up and have a beer in Tami and Phil Bossingham's new motorhome. They had the big Feger banner in the front window. So that was fun.

Jason Feger and Chad Kinder Take Second Night of March Madness at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway

CALVERT CITY, KY (March 7, 2009) – Jason Feger of Bloomington, IL scored the biggest win of his racing career on Saturday Night at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway as he captured the 40 lap-$7,500 to win Late Model Feature. Chad Kinder of Newton, IL took the lead with less than five laps to go to win the $2,000 Open Wheel Modified A-Main. The second night of March Madness again produced excellent track conditions as a large crowd of spectators was on hand under unseasonably warm and windy weather conditions.

Billy Moyer and Shannon Babb would make up the front row of the Late Model Feature as Moyer would get the jump on Babb grabbing the point heading into turn number one on the opening circuit. With one complete lap in the record books Steve Francis would bring out the first caution as he got sideways in turn two as he spun to a stop on the race track. Unfortunately for Francis his night was over as he exited his race car to check out the right front as his night would end on the back of a wrecker.

With the restart Moyer would be the leader on the Delaware double-file alignment with Babb, Feger, Frank Heckenast Jr. and Ray Cook the top five drivers after one lap. The top three would start to distance themselves from Heckenast and Cook who were having quite a race for fourth but most of the attention was up front where Moyer, Babb and Feger were putting on a show in the race for the lead.

Feger would pull even with Babb with eight laps scored and he would complete the pass a circuit later as the driver known as the “Highside Hustler” was living up to his nickname as he ran right along the wall that surrounds the race track. Feger then would set his sights on Moyer as lapped traffic was starting to play a role in the battle for the lead.

Moyer had to pass his son Billy Jr. putting him a lap down as Feger would go around the younger Moyer as well as he would now have plenty of race track to pass the elder Moyer. Feger would drive hard into turn number four and take the lead from Moyer, who came into the race with 702 career feature victories. While Moyer fell to second he now would have Babb hot on his heels as the top three were still keeping the fans on the edge of their seats in an ultra-exciting duel for the top spot.

With Feger’s pass of Moyer on lap 15 to take over the lead the question would be now could Feger hang on the remaining distance with his pedal to the medal driving style? With 16 laps scored a caution for Jeff Larsson who got into the backstretch wall right in front of the leaders would momentarily halt the rapid fire action up front.

On the restart Feger would hold the lead with Moyer and Babb line dup side-by-side behind him. Moyer would get a good restart and clear Babb down the back shute but another caution would negate Moyer’s pass. The next restart would see Babb maintain second in the running order and they would stay that way until the final caution would appear for Jason Riggs one lap shy of the halfway mark at lap 19.

With the green flag in place one more time Feger would see the crossed flags a lap later with Babb holding second followed by Moyer, Cook and Heckenast. The race for the lead would turn into a two-car tussle between Feger and Babb as Moyer was loosing ground the leaders over the last ten laps of the race.

Babb would try the inside several times on Feger, but Feger kept his line up against the wall even bumping the concrete a few times as he was maintaining his lead over Babb which was down to just one car length. As Moyer continued to fade he would slow dramatically on lap 35 pulling into the infield as his night came to an end.

Feger and Babb would race hard all the way to the checkers with Feger repelling Babb’s effort keeping Babb at bay in what turned out to be a barn-burner of a race. Feger would hit his marks on the final lap and take his Bob Pierce Race Cars #25 entry to the finish line as the crowd rose to its feet at the finish as Feger would record the biggest win of his racing career. Babb finished a close second followed by Cook, Heckenast and Jeep VanWormer, Friday Night’s winner.

Afterwards Feger was joined in victory lane by his crew and a throng of supporters including his car builder the Hall of Famer, Bob Pierce. “Man to win this race, I can’t describe it, it feels so good, Shannon Babb is probably my all-time favorite driver and Billy Moyer, I grew up watching him race and to pass both of them and win this race, it is just an unbelievable feeling, I always felt I just needed some breaks go our way in some of these races and we were going to win some, but tonight the car was super fast from the start and I just wanted to keep it out of the wall, I think I hit it a few times, but it didn’t hurt it any,” said the 30-year-old driver who previous career watershed win was a $6,000 win at Macon, IL.

The win by Feger in his Pierce car also marked the biggest Late Model win for the Oakwood, IL based driver turned chassis builder. “Jason did a great job out there, we’re working on a new shock deal with Advanced Racing Suspensions out of Indianapolis and man the car took off right from the get go, hopefully they’ll be many more wins like this,” said Pierce, who success in the open wheel modified ranks is well documented.

KLMS on Friday and Saturday Night

The feature March 7 at Kentucky Lake Speedway in Calvert City, KY was possibly the best race I've ever seen Jason run. It was amazing.

The five plus hour trek to KLMS was well worth it. Katie and Chris went headed South with me. Grandma and Holly were in charge of the dogs in Bloomington.

We had racing fever - the night before, I didn't get anything done at home. I was waiting all night for results, looking through all the bulleting boards trying to find info. Friday night Jason's heat was stacked, the competitors included Jeep, Babb, Francis, and more. Jason finished second to Jeep in the heat and sixth in the feature. Jeep won the feature!! Congrats to Jeep, Angie and their entire family.

Jason Feger lived up to his nickname in a big way at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway's March Madness finale.The Highside Hustler jumped into the tricky top groove from the outset, blazed past Shannon Babb and then Billy Moyer, and survived a few scrapes with the wall and a few jumps over the cushion for a 40-lap victory paying a career-high $7,500 at the 3/8-mile oval in western Kentucky.

"I just thought the top was going to be (good)," said the 30-year-old Bloomington, Ill., driver, who overtook Moyer on the 15th lap and led the rest of the way. "The guys would have to slow down more getting through the middle, especially with a few holes down in turn three getting in, and I thought I'd be able to get around the top that much faster, and carry much more speed. It worked."
Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., challenged Feger a few times in the race's late stages before settling for second while Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., was third in the UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned event. Frank Heckenast Jr. of Orland Park, Ill., was fourth and Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., Friday's $5,000 winner, rounded out the top five. Moyer started on the pole and led the first 14 laps, but he broke an engine while running third on the 34th lap.

Feger's throttle-stomping impressed everyone, including chassis builder and former Hall of Fame driver Bob Pierce, who was among many supporters congratulating Feger in victory lane. When someone said Feger looked like the Tall Cool One of old, citing Pierce's nickname, the former racer brushed off the compliment. "I could never run that high," he said with a big smile.
Feger's foes, too, were impressed that he made the high groove into the winning groove with his fifth-to-first run in the first 15 laps.

"He definitely found that top before everybody did. He definitely drove by us on the top there. It was good for him," said Babb, who started outside the front row and kept an eye on some of Feger's near-disastrous laps the second half of the feature. "When you do drive like that — I've done that 100 times — you can't run every lap that good, but you can always make a good roll, but you never know when you're going to mess up. He didn't ever mess up. ... He had her cooking really good. I was happy for him."

The third-starting Cook thought the high groove had potential, but he was leery of running up there early in the race after his car became airborne when he hit a high-groove hole exiting turn four. "But he was the only one who took the chance on going up there early, and it paid off for him," Cook said.

The 20-year-old Heckenast, who started fourth, found his car running better down low and couldn't keep up with the winner. "I saw him when he went by me. He was putting a show on," Heckenast said. "I was underneath Ray Cook and (Feger) split both of us like we weren't there. He was doing a helluva job."

Feger, who battled last June for a UMP DIRTcar Summernationals victory before high-side miscues contributed to his demise, was glad it all worked out this time around as he brought a new car to KLMS, grabbing a victory and a sixth-place finish in Friday's opener.

"I knew my car was good there at the beginning, but I didn't know how good," Feger said. "I was able to hook that cushion a couple of times and they put me on the outside for that first restart, and it just stuck and I knew it was good. I was just trying to be patient and bide my time and take what I could get, but still take the holes when I could get 'em. Everything just worked out real good.

"I was getting a little nervous, a little shaky. My timing was getting a little off. This was my second night in the car and ... my timing's still not down. I'm a little twitchy. I'm not the smoothest guy anyway, but my timing's just not there yet like it needs to be. I was just getting a little rust shook off. But I can't complain at all, that's a new race car and I'm stoked. It's awesome. Just trying to keep my head and focus and choose my lines and worry about everything else too, it just worked out tonight, it just worked out good."
The race was slowed by four cautions, none for serious incidents. Steve Francis spun on the second lap and was towed off the track. Jeff Larson got into the backstretch wall on lap 17. Brent Kreke spun in turn four on the 19th lap and on the restart, Jason Riggs spun between turns three and four for the final yellow.

For Feger, it was a thrill to take the lead from a Hall of Famer in Moyer, and to outduel Babb, one of his racing heroes, in front of Pierce, another hero.

"Just to be able to run door-to-door with them guys and beat 'em here, and have a little bit of luck go my way here," Feger said. "I'm so glad Bob was here to see it. It just means a lot to me, and all my guys who've worked so hard."

Terry English, driving the Bob Harris-owned Warrior No. B1, had a rare miscue in qualifying, spinning in turn four. ... Newcoming drivers for Saturday were Jeff Beyers of Pana, Ill., Josh Throgmorton of Providence, Ky., and Billy Faust of Lebanon, Ill. ... The season that 'could've been' has Jason Feger looking forward to 2009 campaign.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.
2008 was a season of ups and downs for Jason Feger.Feger started the season on a high note, with feature wins and top-10’s in April and May. In June and parts of July, Jason hit a wall with motor issues during the Summer Nationals in what you could say was hell on the “Hell Tour”. In late July, things started coming around again for Feger and he seemed to be back to his winning ways. In August and early September more disappointing finishes. As the season came to a close, Feger got back on track and finished strong with several big wins against some of the best Late Model competition around.

“We ended up third in the UMP National points and second in the Northern All Stars, so we were pretty satisfied,” Jason remarked. “If it hadn’t been for some flat tires, while we were leading some races and the motor problems we experienced at mid-season during the Summer Nationals, who knows. But this was our best season by far, so all in all, I’m pretty happy with it.”“The year before (2007) we were really fast towards the end, so heading into this season we were really positive and looking forward to the season beginning,” Feger said looking back. We started off this season really hot, things were going good and we won a few big races.”

A couple of feature wins at Jason’s hometown track, Kamp Motor Speedway, including a Northern All Stars victory seemed to give Feger momentum heading into the Summer Nationals. When the Summer Nationals arrived, though, Feger and his team hit a brick wall.“At the first race at Kentucky Lake we won our heat race and pretty much led the whole feature until the last four laps when we had a tire go down.” For Feger and his team, that spelled the beginning of the end for his Summer Nationals. “I don’t know what happened after that. We got a little off track and never could regroup. We would run real well in heat races but come feature time, we always seemed to struggle. With the Summer Nationals you’re gone everyday and you don’t have the opportunity to take the car home, pull the car into the garage and do some brain storming. During Summer Nationals you’re either going really good or really bad. Unfortunately for us, it was the latter.”

Feger decided it was best to go home and regroup. He caught up with the tour at Oakshade on June 21. “We found a few things and corrected them,” he remarked. “We had a real good run there, got into a scuffle with another guy, broke a left front shock and still finished eighth after running third.” More problems arose for Feger a couple of nights later when he blew a motor at Sedalia on June 24. From there it was back to Bloomington once again.The next few nights were nothing but frustration as Jason struggled with his motor time and time again and made repeated trips back home. “I ended up borrowing a motor from Bob Pierce and we headed to Peoria to finish out the tour. “It took me a little while to get adjusted to the new motor but after that, everything just took off for us,” Feger explained.

With a healthy motor and car troubles seemingly behind him, Feger steamrolled the competition in a couple of Monster Midwest Series events taking $2,000-to-win feature victories at Spoon River on July 23 and again on the following night at LaSalle Speedway on July 24. A couple of Summer National make-up dates at Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville and Macon (Ill.) Speedway (the Herald & Review 100) proved that Jason seemed to be back on track with a couple of strong third-place finishes.Starting out the fall schedule, Jason headed to the “World 100” in Eldora, where he had to qualify through a talented B main field to make the A main. Jason finished fourth in the B to make the starting field. Starting 27th in the big show, Feger finished the grueling 100 lapper ending up in 18th place.In mid-September Feger scored an impressive win at Paducah Int’l. Raceway in the “Wayne Coakley Memorial” in what proved to be a thrilling finish with Feger passing Brad Neat on the last lap to score the $5,000 victory.

Luck was finally on our side for that race. That car may have been the worse car I’ve had there, but as they say better to be lucky than good! Looking back, we probably should’ve won two or three other races we competed in at Paducah last season,” Feger mentioned. “We were leading the race one night and got a flat and still finished second to (Ken) Schrader driving on the rim. In the MARS race we were leading that and had another tire go down. I love that track, it really fits my driving style well.”

As the momentum kept going, Feger accomplished a life-long dream by winning the “Kamp 50” at his hometown track of Kamp (Ind.) Motor Speedway to round out the month of September. “It seems like at your home track you usually struggle a lot. I don’t know if it’s the pressure or what. We’ve won a couple of $2,000 Northern All Stars races there before but when a big event like the “Kamp 50” or a national race like the World of Outlaws it always seemed like things wouldn’t come together.” That night things came together for the “Highside Hustler” as he came from his fifth starting position to check out a stellar field of Late Models.

For the 2009 season Feger’s goals won’t change much from the previous seasons. “I’m not one to chase points. A lot of guys will chase the points but I’ve discovered when I try and do that I do nothing but wear out my equipment. I’d rather save it for the big shows,” he commented. “The way the UMP points works if you do well during the Summer Nationals and some of the big shows you’re probably going to be towards the front of the national points. Last year we really tried to be more focused on being more prepared going to the track rather than racing quite as many nights, which I feel really helped a lot.“We’re going into this season with that same mindset. I’m going to try and be more prepared, which we’re already set up better this season with a new car and a solid back up, which is the car we ran last year. Our motor program is much better this year than year’s past, which we think will be a big plus.

We’re just that much better prepared this season for the big races. If you prepare yourself for the big shows and run well when they come around, in the end, you’ll be there when the points come around, too. If we can run great come Summer Nationals time and string together some top-five’s and top-10’s and show some consistency, we’ll be near the top for points.”Feger also mentioned that the upcoming Monster Midwest Tour promoted by Don Hammer will be another great opportunity to score points in the always competitive UMP Late Model division. “Instead of a week long event like it’s been in the past, he has a 20 to 25 race schedule that starts in May and runs through October. Most of the races are within a two to three hour jaunt for Feger. “He has a points fund together and contingencies for the series, which really helps. Most of the shows will be $2,000 to win and that’ll bring in guys like Erb, Hedrick, Steidinger, Weaver and the Shepherds. The competition will definitely be there.”

For the future, Jason wants to run on the national level someday. “I’d love to run on the World of Outlaws tour someday. The competition there is the toughest around and that’s where you want to prove yourself. I’d like to be like a (Brian) Birkhofer or a (Scott) Bloomquist and freelance. They go where the big money is and run the tracks they want. I’d love to have that opportunity someday. That’s all my crew and I would like to do, is be out on the road full-time.“With our financial situation, we can’t do that right now. I know that I can run with those guys, but when I make that commitment I want to be prepared. When and if I run in those series I want to be in it for the long haul and know that I have a shot at doing it,” he said. “I don’t want to be running the series and then stop because we ran out of money or we don’t have the proper equipment to continue. I want to see the whole thing through.”

For now, Feger feels fortunate to be in the position he’s in. We’re able to race on a lot of quality tracks right here in the Midwest, compete in some big shows and race against some stout competition.”Jason couldn’t race without support from his sponsors and crew. Jason Feger headed North last week to help Jeep prepare for Speedweeks in Florida. Sounds like they had quite a bit of work to do last week in the shop. The past week-end they spent in Georgia watching the races. This week -- Speedweeks to kick off Jeep Van Wormer's run for the Lucas Oil Series. Jason will be serving as Jeep's temporary crew down South than head home with lots of work to do up here to prepare for the Feger teams kick-off at Kentucky Lake Speedway in early March.

I'm sure Jeep will put on a heck of a show at any track he's at. Jeep is running a new Rocket after making the switch from Mastersbilt.

Feger voted 2008 Most Improved Driver

We didn't see that one coming. At the UMP banquet in Dec, Jason received the award as 2008 UMP most improved driver. How cool is that!!

The trophy is about as tall as Jason. I haven't seen it yet, Kris the Shockman from Advance has it.

In addition, Jason received third place in national UMP late model standings, missing second by five point. Plus second in Northern All Stars.

Hope 2009 is a great season as well.

2008 Track of the Year

WOO HOO!!! Congrats to Bob & Gayle Kamp, plus everyone that works at Kamp Motorspeedway for being voted 2008 UMP Track of the Year. That's quite an honor. Kamp was also the Track of the Year in 2005.

If you haven't been to Kamp, ya gotta go -- it is well worth the trek from Bloomington, IL. The track is bigger than most in Central Illinois, excellent facility, the fans and promoters are great, plus the track is FAST!!! You'll get to see some of the best side by side racing around.

Here's a bit of trivia -- Jason Feger won his first late model feature at Kamp.

Hope to make it there lots of times in 2009. My guess if there isn't a big show on a Sat night some place else, you'll see the tumbling dice at Kamp.

JAX the puppy has a new Forever Home!!

JAX now has a full name: Jaxon James. He also has a three year old, 4 legged brother Damon, plus two boys and a cat to play with.

Have you lost a puppy?? This is the little guy that Holly found this morning. Hopefully the owners will contact us . . . this poor little guy is having the time of his life playing with Sam, Dixie and Voche. Unfortunately, the inn is full at our house. So if the owners don't find us, Jax (that's his name for now) will need to go to CISAR.

Found Lost Puppy

Found lost young dog/puppy around 8:10 behind apartment complex on Mecherle drive, which is behind Premium Pet Supply in Kmart Plaza. We are guessing HE is less than 10 months old. Reddish in color. Appears to have German Sheppard in him, darker muzzle, darker tail. He also has white toes. No collar or microchip. Contact Holly Moreman at 309-242-5307 or Tracy Feger at 309-242-2705. We will also try to post a photo. We will also leave a message with the Humane Society on Wednesday.

OMG!!!! Thanks so much!! What a turn out for the Feger Bash at Tri-Lakes,
I'm still exhausted!

Over 400 people packed the house at Tri-Lakes in Bloomington on November 15. Lots of other drivers were in the house, people from all over the place, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and of course Central Illinois. Think ya' all went through 5 kegs, plus ran out of bottles, all the jello shots and lots of other stuff. And yes, the kids that were there had a great time.

Food was great! Music was great! The auction went fantastic. Some of the hot items were the kool Feger blankets, the Gilmore sprint set, the beer pong tables, Shawn gave a great speech about Jason's Hoosier flats, so the Hoosier flags were hot sellers, plus lots of other stuff. Thanks to everyone who donated items! The winners of the Erb car kept putting it back in the auction, it was wild. Dennis has to be one of the toughest drivers out there, guess Jason better get in front of him more often.

Jason, Austin and the rest of us can't thank all of you enough . . . I'm so serious about this . . . all you, who buy any Feger stuff and support this team really do keep him on the track! Thank you so much.

Kentucky Lake -- last races of the year

Running late posting like usual -- a couple of weeks ago the guys went to Paducah for the Battle of Mods. First night rain out, second night I think third and last night started pretty far back in the field and moved up to fourth in only 25 laps.

Kentucky Lake is an awesome track and facility. WOW if you can ever make it down there you really should. We have some nice tracks in Central Illinois, it's hard for me to say, but the facilities around here don't compary to Paducah, Pevely or Kentucky Lake. The slightly bigger tracks are my favorites. The trek to Boswell, another great track is nothing when you have to drive 4.5 - 5.5 hours to get to the tracks.

Rokae, Wendy, Sam and I made the 5 hour plus trek for Sat nights racing. What an adventure, poor Sam is a drivers ed instructor -- lol, so she may have closed her eyes a few times with me driving :) Near Matoon/Charleston, IL went over some patched pavement and my car started beeping at us. I turned it off. We were making really good time and should be at the track early -- that's amazing for me, to get there early.

Any way, pulled off the ramp, into the frontage road to Steak & Shake. Passed the entry way into the S & S, turned around in the hotel and I noticed the car felt funny. We got out of the car at S & S, I went to the other side and the darn right rear tire was flat! Crap!!!! No way was I going to change the tire, I haven't had to deal with a flat tire in YEARS. So we saw a gas station, drove the block to the station. As I was pulling up to the air pump, there was $$$ blowing on the ground next the curb. I jumped out the car yelling MONEY. They all thought I was nuts. Grabbed the money, it ended up being only $9. Hey, it could have been all hundreds for all I knew. Sam got out of the car too. I aired up the tire, WOOOSH -- the air came back out.

DARN IT!!! We saw a Walmart down the road, so Sam ran to the main road to figure out the best route. We drove my poor car to Walmart. Of course it was going to take at least an hour to fix it. So much for being early.

We went and ate while waiting for the car. Eventually hit the road again. Pulled off the second exit near Marion, had to use the bathroom, get tea, etc. Once back in the car we headed to the interstate, the darn ramp to get back on the interstate was closed. GEEEEEZE, we can't catch a break. Sam asked some young guy at a stop light how to get to the interstate. He told us, go left, than right and left again. OK -- that didn't help. Pulled up to another guy walking, who gave us good instructions. Eventually we backpeddled to the first Marion exit. Now we really starting to run behind.

Hit the gas and made it to the track at the end of qualifing.

Thirteen wins!!

WOW -- how about it 13 feature wins in one season. Hopefully after this week-end the guys will have another win. So what about UMP National Points -- Jason finished third!! Also finished third in UMP Northern points. He finished second in Northern All Star points. So the team's had a great season. Still have the opportunity to pick up a few more wins.

NALMS win at East Moline

Last Saturday night, October 11 at East Moline Speedway Feger captured the feature flying on the highside. The Bob Pierce race car handled great, any where on the track.

Jason started the night off with the fastest time in his group. He put on a show trying to get past Ray Guss Jr. in the heat race. Come feature time, Jason started sixth, by lap five was running second behind Brandon Sheppard. A yellow came out on lap five, on the restart Jason had Brandon passed coming out of turn two. He had a substantial lead on the pack the entire race while going in and out of lapped traffic.

Nice thing was Karen from Bell was on hand to see the win, plus the guys met a lot of people from the Quad Cities. Thanks to Karen for getting info about the team on the Bell website!

The track was in good shape, multi-groove. This week-end, Pevely -- the UMP Round-Up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Next week-end Battle of the Mods at Kentucky Lake. If you know anyone that owns a Mod and needs a driver, have them give Jason a call, he'd love to run both classes at Kentucky Lake.

Bad luck at East Moline

Jason had fast time in his heat.
Finished second in his heat.
Feature event, running second till the leader Erb ran over a lapped car, causing the car to spin infront of Jason. Feger hit the lapped car, buckled the nose of the car and had to go to the rear.
Moved back to seventh.

:( The leader shouldn't have to take out a lap car.
